This winter Bruce Smith gets inducted to the Collegiate Hall of Fame.
Smith, the former Booker T. Washington, Virginia Tech and Buffalo Bills star, will soon become just the third local product and only the fourth Hokie player enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame.
Smith was in New York City on Tuesday morning where he was introduced as one of 13 players and two legendary coaches making up the class of 2006. They will be inducted at a dinner in New York in December and officially enshrined at the Hall of Fame in South Bend, Ind., next summer.
Smith was twice a first-team All-American for the Hokies and one of the first big-name players Tech had on its way to joining the nation's elite programs. Upon being announced Tuesday, Smith stepped to the podium and rang in the momentous occasion with this:
"Quite often, I get asked, 'What's a Hokie?' I would tell a few guys, you just have no idea. But they want to know, so I say, 'OK, here you go: A Hokie is an ass-kickin' chicken.' "
