No way. He's old and doesn't want to come back to Buffalo. If he expressed interest, then it might be something to talk about, but I don't think we should PURSUE him.

After leaving and singing with the Redskins, he was so happy he said he would retire a Redskin. No way.

So did Thurman and Andre- they mouthed off a little when they left. They retired as Bills.

Let's do the same w/ Bruce if we can- he'd be an awesome pass rushing specialist I think.

How much does he have left? I suppose a part time role would help.

I have a question. Is he even a free agent??? Or is he going to be released??

The_Philster

He might be released from reports that were out a few weeks ago...his contract was 5 yrs, $25M when he signed with them.

I think it's pretty certain he's going to be released. If he has anything left I sure would love to have him here again.

IMO, the only Bills player who was as amazing on the field as Bruce was OJ. I used to watch the games over again in slow motion just to break down Bruce's unbelieveable moves. He had this one where he would literally lift and pull the lineman, using his opponents weight to propel himself toward the QB. I wouldn't have thought that possible but he did it. He had this other one where he would stick his arm out past the guy's waist then wrap his elbow around his back then slither by on the outside to get to the QB. How a guy that big could do those things was amazing.

Then I say lets grab him and we can have a nice rotation with. Schobel, Jones, chidi, and bruce.

Looks like I'm in the minority on this one. If he came back he would probably not be an every down player. For me it's a matter of dollars and sense. I think the money can be spent more productively. On the other hand, I'm fully in favor of Bruce Smith coming back when he's ready to retire, signing a one day contract and retiring as a Bill like Thurman and Andre. That would be up to him, however.

I join the minority. I know this won't be a popular opinion after reading all the post, but Yes he was a great player, but i couldn't stand his consant complaining about EVERYTHING, his b!tching about people in Buffalo being racist toward him, and how he seemed to ALWAYS know every the camera was after a sack was amazing. If he wants to come back after his playing days for a 1 day contract ok, I thought he was a talented Big  baby.

I'm with you guys, kgun too!

Absolutely not!

Most of these guys haven't seen him play recently. I watched a bunch of Skins games in Skins country last year and I'm tellin' ya, he's no better than Schobel now. He's slow off the corner, he gets manhandled b/c he's simply not that large, he's huffin' and puffin' by the early 3rd Q.

There's no way on earth that he would add anything to our team as a first string player. Chidi's better due to his size, which isn't saying a whole lot. Bruce's recent sacks were mostly against crud teams with horrible OLs and slow QBs. Dallas (3), Seattle (2), Houston (2), Giants (1), Titans (1). Against teams w/ decent OLs and decent QBs, he got no sacks against: Philly twice, the Niners, Packers, N.O., Indy, Jax, St. Louis, or Arizona.

If anyone had actually watched him this past season they'd have seen an average DE take advantage of some situations. He's useless against decent OLTs anymore. Most of the support is purely emotional. But I agree w/ kgun12, his incessant whining made me not exactly keep the door from kickin' his a$$ outta here when he left.

Bottom line: He wouldn't take a backup role and he's not worth puttin' on our starting rotation. Who cares where he gets the record. He'll always be known for his play here. If he wants to sign a 1-day contract, fine. But this team is movin' forward, not trying to sell tix anymore by allowing a former fan favorite who left on bad terms due to his own choosing, try and get a sack record here that he should have gotten this past season. He's average at best and we don't need average. We need great or the best. He's neither anymore.

Plus he'll be 40 this year. I agree that he's somewhat of a physical phenomena, but 40 is 40 and there's no way he'll be better than average. Depending upon where he does sign, he may barely get the record. If all he wants is the record, then he should go to an NFC North team where he's sure to get it against that division's QBs/OLs.

I agree with the "minority", I wouldn't bring anyone back just so they could "get a record as a Bill". Let him come back for a day and retire. He was GREAT in his day.... let's remember him that way.

Bruce should retire if he's released. It would be nice for him to get the sack record and that's why he will play another year, but his skills have diminished.I remember when teams would double and triple him,now he's single blocked. We are trying to win a championship and signing him for nostalgia purposes would be counterproductive.

Besides Bruce only cares about Bruce, He's not going to help anyone. Just give ME the record, that's what bruce is all about, ME! ME! ME!

As to Bruce's sack record, if he didn't know exactly how many White had, I doubt he'd be chasing this so arduously. IMO Bruce was one of the best DEs, certainly the best (arguably) speed DE to ever play the game. But, I think it loses something when he's hangin' on by a handful of mediocre seasons to try and beat a record set by White who logged 198 sacks in only 14 or 15 seasons while Bruce tries to beat that record after he turns 40 in his 19th season.

It just loses a little something to me and is anti-climatic. Even if he does set the record, it'll have taken him 5 more seasons and like another 50 games. Good for him, and his career is extremely impressive overall especially given the fact that he can play at an NFL level at the age of 40, albeit only average or less. Nevertheless, Bruce has had a storied career w/ plenty of accolades. But any player who is healthy and good can beat a record of another when he plays an additional 50 games and 4 seasons.

It's certainly what he was about when he left. I seem to remember most Bills fans saying "C-Ya" when all he did was whine about his salary as if it was part of the game-day strategy each week. LOL

Unfortunately for Bruce, Reed, and Thurman, they all got caught with FAcy exploding as they were in the twilight of their careers. Each and every one of them thought that the Bills should have paid them for their past contributions. But that's not the way it works in the NFL. If they had all been born 10 years later they all would have made 3 (or more) times as much during their careers. But again, they weren't and they got paid what players got paid during those times. None of the three succeeded in realizing or accepting that their careers were essentially over while they were demanding big bucks, justifiably seemingly, only due to their past contributions. Clearly the Bills could not do that.

In any case, you're absolutely right kgun, Bruce, Reed, and Thurman went elsewhere to spite the team and it backfired on all but Bruce. Reed's career ended with him making only a 4th of the money that the Bills offered him. Thurman's career ended in a season/career ending injury in his first season away from Buffalo and in Miami of all places, where he wouldn't have done jack that season anyway. Only Bruce got the bucks he wanted and then only b/c Snyder thought he was gonna revolutionize the NFL from a meddling, er a..., I mean managing standpoint. Him and his "run the NFL like it's a computer business" nonsense caused him to overspend for many free agents. George and Deion among them who both took the Skins to the cleaners. Especially Deion.

Anyhoo...

WG
02-13-2003, 12:09 PM
I think only 3. It's 3 +/- 1. I forget. He should get it this year simply by moving forward on each snap as long as he plays somewhere. LOL

I remember very well that the main reason he left was because he felt Thomas and Reed weren't treated fairly by management. It wasn't mainly about the money.

I have nothing bad to say about Bruce. What's next Kelly sucks?

For those of you with such a short memory...Bruce, Thurman and Andre were let go for salary cap reasons. Plain and simple.

He had 9 sacks last year, thats pretty impressive for a man his age...and if we sign him to a 1 year/1 million dollar contract(like this thread suggests) i think it would be worth it. I am sure bruce would love breaking the record at the Ralph in front of all the bills fans...as long as signing him dosent keep us from signing a "real" player like spikes or a DT.

that's what I meant. He spoke out that Thurman wasn't even tendered an offer w/c he felt was unfair. I think Bruce would like to leave with a bang. Be it with the bills or with someone else.
