Feb. 12, 2003) -- The two most important methods of securing talent in the NFL are through the draft and unrestricted free agency. Some NFL experts stand by the draft method as the most important way to build a team. Others swear by the veteran free-agent method. In the end, most agree it's a combination of both.

What's really fascinating to me and an absolute requirement to build a team in this era is the ability to make both dimensions work hand in hand. Pro personnel people and college draft people must work together. Whether NFL coaches and personnel people like to admit it or not, free agency is married to the draft. With that in mind, I'm going to break down one position at a time over the next few weeks to uncover the thinking and logic that goes into personnel moves this offseason.

Do we keep the player we have at that position? Do we sign a better one in free agency? Do we cut who we have? Do we think we can get a replacement in the draft? Do we have to move up in the draft to get an upgrade in talent?
