View Full Version : Fans are idiots

There are some fans here who are giving post game celebrations a bad name.

There is an area of town where most of the partying goes on. It's in an area where most of the bar hopping on the weekend happens. It has also been the central meeting area for the post game celebrations.

After every series victory the party has escalated. On Saturday they absolutely destroyed the strip smashing in shop windows, damaging bus shelters, wrecking phone booths and having bonfires inthe middle of the street.

Until now the celebrations have only led to minor damage to the area but the celebration on Saturday was way out of hand. Now the cops and city officials are looking to shut down the area.

Fans can be morons, but what do they expect when you serve alcohol all night and then let them onto the area full of adrenaline from the victory.

Great shot here of the crowd:

Tell me about it. We went for the obligatory drive down Whyte after teh Detroit series and it wasn't too bad. we got there just before they shut the streets down to traffic so we were able to revel in good spirits.

It didn't get too out of hand until Sat.

Now the hooligans are going to ruin for everyone else who likes to drive around celebrating.

Do they feel like they have to out do the craziness that the Red Mile in Calgary had?

Actually that area is known for rowdieness. They took pride that they were partying better and saner than the folks on the Red Mile. Up until that last Saturday things were relatively calm down there. No too many arrests, not too much vandalism or hooliganism.

Things just got out of hand Sat with the weather being awesome fueled by the victory and the fact that bars open their front entrances and extend their patios well out onto the sidewalks. Puts people closer to the street for the parade of fools.

We had a riot there a few years ago on Canada Day so the mob rules mentality still prevails over that area.

You mean you didn't hear about teh riot of 2001?

Close to 100,000 people converged on Whyte after Canada Day celebrations. It was very ugly.

Heres an article about it (http://www.seemagazine.com/Issues/2001/0705/front1.htm)

They just fired the "Crowd Control" top cop.

The team is now doing public service announcements asking people to behave on Whyte during the cup finals.

I have learned one good thing out of all of this and that's the fact that despite the 30,000 + that were out celebrating, only 15 people were arressted and they have just released the pictures of another 11 facing charges.

So having just 26 people charged out of 30,000 is a blessing. However all it takes it a few a-holes to ruin the fun.
