And stop the 'competition' Crap. This is a football fact I already know but some here still feel that 'competition' for JP etal will make them that much better.

It is...pure crap. It always has been. the only time you have competition is when you don't have a clear cut starter and you need to get one guy to possibly seperate himself from the rest of the QB's for this season. That would be only until you got a clear cut starter from somewhere else.

Marv made comment about several teams in the NFL in the same boat as Buffalo as for as not having clear cut starters. The problem is history shows when you have that guy, odds are you can be a successful team. (Note: Yes I know there are the Leafs, Harringtons, Couches out there, but for the most part you MUST have that clear cut guy).

Lets look at playoff teams from the last 3 years.

All but Washington had a clear cut guy going into camp. Tampa changed to Sims after an injury to griese (by us none the less :-) The Washington experiment went toes up very quickly and they picked the right guy. Now a quick side note. Someone is going to read this and say something stupid like 'See ICE they went with an older guy that was suposedly washed up in Brunell, so we should go with holcomb. 1) Greater arm by Brunell, 2) he has been a playoff/ Probowl QB. Holcomb...never has been, never will be)

Outside of Dallas, again clear cut starters.

Bottom line, the 'competition' has to end with this camp and us get a clear cut guy in here and establish that identity on offense again. We arn't going to go very far with out that clear cut guy.

If JP can't win the job for some reason, its time to cut bait and go get a guy va trade or Free agency this next offseason and put this situation that has plagued us for about 10 years now, to rest.

A couple of notes. First off yeah marv may be right other teams have this issue. Did you notice how many repeat teams in the playoffs the last 3 years? All of them had set starters that dont' 'Compete' for their QB jobs each year.

Next Chicago this last year. They went with a rookie and won about 10 games with him. Some vets *****ed, the brought back the original guy when healthy. They didn't improve and in fact got their asses kicked in the playoffs. You dance with the one that brung ya.

QB is the one position above all others you MUST have constant stability. I hope they get smart, name losman the starter and let him have this season. Then we can know if we need to go get a guy or not. but if it is losman, leave him alone and let him play.

I think JP's biggest problem is his ability to use his head. He has all the physical tools, but he doesn't have the mentality to go with the tools. Thats also why I don't think his supporting cast is his problem. I think if JP doesn't have a breakout season this year he will not be in Bills uni next year. Remember TD selected him, tht doesn't speak well for the Bills pickup.

I agree with one exception- he hasn't proven he has the mental ability yet. I'm still hoping he has it. Also, the OL sucked last year.

And you're right- if JP doesn't show us he's the guy this year, it will be time to cut him loose. I don't want to be like the Lions with Harrington, the Skins with Ramsey, or the Ravens with Boller: holding on to a lost cause for 4-5 years before giving up.

Agreed BUT! But....We need to give him 16 games, hell or high water to get ANY idea of if this kid is going to be anything or not. He has a 4 int day, so what? Kelly had that before and still started. All QB's have up and down times. We must let him play out the season even if its 1-15. That is the only way you see if this kid has it or not. Even then just 24 starts is still pushing it to make a determination.

Give him the entire 06 season. If he crapps out, go get another starter. But even then, the guy starts no matter what.

I agree. Losman either is or isn't the man. To the abyss with Kelly Holcomb. Nall could be a diamond in the rough but this QB competition situation has now led me to believe that Levy and Jauron must lack faith in Losman. Coughlin did not hesitate in NY with Warner and Manning. He could see very quickly that the only way young Eli could improve was to play him. The same holds true for any young QB. So why in the hell are we wasting time? A starter absolutley must be declared before training camp begins. If one is not identified I think it spells big trouble for the dawn of the Jauron/Levy regime.

If JP starts week one he's done something right in the minds of the coaching staff and will have earned the right to start all 16 games. If he gets pulled at any point during the seasons it will be a bad sign. At this point it's too early to know where he stands with the Bills and time will tell if he's matured through the offseason. He is learning a whole new system, he may aswell be a rookie again, given how little he's played and how unfamilar he is with the new system. That won't help his cause.

Yeah but look who you are talking about. Ascorsi(sp) who is a great GM and Caughlin who is a strong HC. We are talking about 81 year old Marv that can't make a 1/2 time adjustment to save his arse and has NO GM exp, and Jauron whom no one but us wanted.

I think that there is no clear cut favorite. If there were a clear cut favorite then that favorite would stand out. Since there is no standout it is the best thing for the team to have a competition.

Good post ICE. I agree - the only time there is competition is when you know you have crap. And if that's the case here (which I can't see how with so little data on JP, but anyway) then we're already sunk.

Anything "by committee" in this league is almost always a recipe for disaster.

There's no rush. Nall got the offense at least two months after Holcomb and Losman so he needs a little more time. Do you want to throw him under the bus before you know what he can do? Levy has no intention of letting that happen. There is no rush to name a starter. So what if it isn't until after the second or third preseason game? Better to make the right choice.

I employed that commonly used phrase to indicate that it happens quite frequently, which it does. A dichotomy in this situation can exist. Competition can occur all the time but not be universal to all situations. From now on l refrain from using such phrases to avoid the inference of the absolute.

There is definately competition at the high paying skill positions. It makes no sense to stick with a player who is underperforming when there is another player who is showing more desire and productivity in practice.

The majority of coaches feel that winning is more important than playing the person who is making more money because their jobs are contingent on winning.

Let Losman start 16 games and ride with him for the whole season for better or worse. Just look at Eli Manning, he sucked big time the first season and now is proving himself more and more.

But thats because all the QB's you mention are "clear cut favorites".....because they've earned it. If the Steelers,Colts, Bengals or Pack had your QB's and you had theirs, all of those teams would have QB competition, because there is no clear cut favorite. The Bills don't have a clear cut favorite, so the best thing for them is to find out who wans it the most and go with that player. It's clearly the Bill coaching staffs best and only option.

LMFAO! What exactly has JP proved to be mentioned with that list of QB's?

Personally I think a competition is the wrong way to go. In a fair competition JP would likely finish 3rd. That's what you're afraid of also, obviously and it would mean you'd have to deflate your JP blow up doll. I think we should hand JP the job again so he can drive the team straight into the ditch. You are wrong on this.

The story I heard on TV this last season was Phil Simms relating a conversation that he had with Lewis. He said that Palmer clearly out-performed Kitna in training camp and pre-season. Lewis said it was so obvious that it was a no-brainer.

There was competition and Palmer won.

"Quite frequently" implies alot more than "not that often". Since you are saying it happens quite frequently, please cite the copious examples required to back up that claim. The burden of proof lies on your shoulders since I say it does not happen very often at the high paying skill positions.

I have already cited an instance in this thread - Palmer and Kitna. Palmer did not get the starting job until he earned it.

The Bills with Travis Henry and McGahee. McGahee did not start at the beginning of the season but beat out Henry later on.

The Dolphins with Brown and Williams.

Pittsburg had a competition with Maddox and Stewart with Stewart losing out. Then Rothlesberger beat out Mddox.

The Niners with Montana and Young.

There was a competition for the Seahawks QB spot the past few seasons.

It happens quite often.

In fact, it is the rule rather than the exception. Not absolute, but almost all of the time competition determines the starter.

Travis/WM: TD's decision to take a gamebreaking RB. Travis was never that kind of back. Willis was drafted in the 1st rd to replace, not to compete.

Brown/Williams: They drafted Brown with their #2 pick to be the man. RW wasn't even on the team in '04 and they had no idea if he'd show up with a joint in one hand and a bong in the other. There were contract issues with Williams and they kept him on for depth, not serious competition for starting RB.

Stewart/Maddox: KS was drafted in the 2nd rd in '95. Maddox was brought in six years later in '01 and had been out of football from '95-01 (from '92-'95 he was on 3 different teams) I think it is fair to say he was brought in as a backup and surprised everyone by doing what he did. This was not a case where the plan was to have two really good QBs "competing" it out to be the starter.

Maddox/Ben: Maddox was never the same after his injury and they drafted Ben to replace Maddox, not to compete with him. Hence the reason he started in his rookie year. You don't use a 1st rd pick to compete. You use a 1st rd pick to be the man.

Montana/Young: Young went to sfo in '87. Montana left after the '92 season. That's a pretty long "competition". Only in his final year there did Montana play fewer games than Young.

Seahawks: Kitna's last year there was '00. Dilfer and Hasselbeck both came in '01 at the SAME time to yes, compete. Matt won out, and played the rest of the way. However, as I've pointed out, you don't have a competition when that skill position is set. In this case, they flushed the toilet and brough two guys in to compete.

So, looking at the examples you cited, I still do not see the evidence to support your claim that this is the rule, not the exception.

All of examples are valid. You have done nothing to disprove them.

Williams took a lot of reps away from Brown because he effectively competed against him.

Maddox won the job from Stewart. If he was good enough he would have started over Ben.

Montana was better and kept the job but Young was breathing down his back. There was plenty of competition there. Just because Montana kept the job does not mean that they were not competing.

As you said, there was competition for the Seahawks job. Thanks.

Why in the world would a coach not want competition? If a player is clearly superior to his understudy, then he has competed and won. When the understudy takes away the starting job from the incumbent he has competed and won. That is the way it works and that is the way it should work.

Circumstances where the job is handed over to someone who has not won the position through competition are the exception. There are very few instances of that happening lately in the NFL. I can only think of a few - last year with Losman was one of them.

All of examples are valid. You have done nothing to disprove them.

In your mind maybe, but I'm satisfied with my analysis. Guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this one and move on.
