No not that one. But might as well be:

Texans | M. Williams sidelined with toenail infections
Wed, 7 Jun 2006 15:55:51 -0700
The Associated Press reports Houston Texans (http://www.kffl.com/team/18/nfl) rookie DE Mario Williams (http://www.kffl.com/player/13443/nfl) (foot) will be sidelined for the rest of the week due to having the toenails on both of his big toes removed. Williams had the toenails removed Monday, June 5, after struggling with infections because of problems. "They were bothering him throughout the camp," said Texans (http://www.kffl.com/team/18/nfl) head coach Gary Kubiak (http://www.kffl.com/player/6552/nfl). "So instead of trying to fight it, they removed them. We're giving him a few days off to make sure it heals properly." Kubiak added that Williams would likely return to practice Friday, June 7.

Sounds more like ingrown toenails which can be very painful......I've had them and as a medic in the Army, removed them......it does take a couple of days to heal. The guy needs to learn how to trim his nails better and wear different shoes/sneakers

I had them and had them removed and what a difference it made after I healed from the operation. It can take a week or two to heal properly, but will make him feel a lot more comfortable on his feet, which isn't going to be good news for the guys who have to play head-up against him.

Infections from ingrown toenails are treated with an antibiotic like Keflex (old name), once the swelling goes down, then the ingrown toenail is removed.......anyone want details on how it's done?? :D

Been there, done that.

I just thought it was interesting that another M Williams is out of practice for some seemingly silly injury

Great :D

Most ingrown toenails are on the big toe....I'd say 95%. Why? Well, more pressure is placed on the inside part of your feet......also, a big part is improperly trimming the nails.

If the ingrown toenail causes an infection, the infection must be the first focus. Why? Well, locals do not diffuse well in infected tissue. The treatment of choice is Keflex (old name)....usually take it for 3-5 days or until the infection/swelling goes down.

The next step is what's called a "digtal block". This is the injection of a local into both sides of the big toe at the base so you "block" the nerve. You stick needle into base of toe on each side of the bone. Start injecting local when you can feel pressure from the needle on the bottom of the big toe....do not stick needle all the way through. Pull back on needle while injecting...

Once the digital block is initiated, it can take 15-30 minutes before the toe is deadened enough for removal of the ingrown nail. During this period, you soak the affected area to "tenderize" the nail and surrounded area. After that you clean the affected area after testing nerve response....use needle on tip of big toe... if digital block is done properly, it take only a few minutes to ridge out the part of the nail that is ingrown. Ridging is just taking a nail file like instrument and stick it under the nail and basically use it to leverage the ingrown nail out....cut the nail to the cuticle...use phenol to burn the cuticle (wont grow back).......clean the area, use topical antibiotic, and use tubular gauze to cover toe......keep taking Keflex for a total of 10 days (3x a day) and 2 or 3 gauze changes a day.......usually a person is back on the toes in 2-3 days
