Defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson had a free agent visit Thursday with the Dolphins, a source said.
If signed, Wilkinson would likely replace Keith Traylor as the Dolphins' starting nose tackle. Traylor will be 37 entering the regular season and was arrested last month on charges of driving under the influence and illegal possession of a prescription drug in Oklahoma.
The 6-4, 353-pound Wilkinson was released last month by Detroit after telling new Lions coach Rod Marinelli he was unsure about whether he wanted to continue playing. Wilkinson, who has missed only seven games in a 12-year NFL career, spent the past three seasons in Detroit after stints with Washington (1998 to 2002) and Cincinanti (1994 to 1997).

Nicknamed "Big Daddy," the 33-year-old Wilkinson was the No. 1 overall pick by the Bengals in the 1994 draft coming out of Ohio State.

Well, Saban's hope is that the old guys like Taylor, Wilkinson, Traylor, Carter can hold the DL down until our younger guys like the 2 Wrights, Vickerson, and others can hopefully play as well. I really think you're seeing a team that is in need of major youth, and Saban is stalling until he can replenish the Defensive with some talent via the draft.

As far as the pickup, it'd be great. We'd have 2 pure NT, and now be able to rotate our DL a whole lot more than we did last year. Saban has been stacking the DL, and the LB corp only got better with Hodge.

it's probably not a bad move for the Fish, but it's a temporary one. Eventually Saban's gotta get more youth or that D will fall apart.

We do have youth it's just inexperienced at the present time. Manny made strides last year so did Roth, Vickerson was on the move when he was injured. We also drafted a few hopefuls this year in Rod Wright, Fred Evans and Fifita. We shall see what saban does with them. In the meantime we have a good rotation and Wilkinson would just add to that rotation. I would be fine with the move. I happen to like where we stand with the youth on the Dline waiting in the wings. Saban loves brining in as much experience as he can to teach the youth thats waiting their turn. He does it with the coaching staff too.

I'd love to have Wilkinson here for 1-2 years instead of Tim Anderson
