New rules give minority coaches false hope, illusion of progress

To the equal-rights people who are peeved at the National Football League about the recent hiring of head coaches Bill Parcells, Steve Mariucci and Dennis Erickson, I give you Marvin Lewis and Rod Graves.

Since the NFL in mid-December instituted a minority-hiring policy, one that requires teams to at the very least consider (notice the gray area here) minority candidates, two have been hired into key positions — Lewis was named head coach of the Bengals, and Arizona's Graves joined Baltimore's recently promoted Ozzie Newsome as the league’s first two black general managers.

I give you progress, case in point.

More than 100 coaches and front office personnel attended a meeting Friday during the NFL scouting combine.
