Cal's Kyle Boller has moved his way into the first round. What is also becoming clear is that he isn't the only quarterback who will likely be drafted there. The impressive week in Mobile has Chris Simms potentially moving into the first round, as well, and there are some teams absolutely enamored with Florida's Rex Grossman. While no one is arguing that there are five quarterbacks among the draft's top 32 talents, NFL insiders are quietly confirming that they'd be surprised if the entire five-headed QB monster of Palmer, Leftwich, Boller, Grossman, and Simms did not make the 1st round. Teams such as Cincinnati, Chicago, Carolina, Denver, and Green Bay have all spent extensive time scouring the elite quarterbacks of the draft. What hasn't been so widely circulated is that there are several other teams quietly scouting these players as well - teams like Kansas City, Arizona, Jacksonville, Baltimore, and Pittsburgh...

It's hard to imagine that all 5 QBs will go in the first round...but stranger things have happened. They will be gone by mid second though.

University of Tennessee WR Kelley Washington was in Dallas where he had further MRI's done on his neck. The doctor who performed the surgery has declared Washington 100% for the combine. The doctor will also send the MRI results with Kelley to show the NFL teams how the neck has healed.

Washington State CB Marcus Trufant is running in the 4.27-4.32 range consistently.....

.Morgan State TE Vishante Shiancoe has been running in the high 4.5 area in training and threw up 30 reps of 225-lbs.....

Tennessee FS/CB Julian Battle is weighing 206-pounds and running low 4.4's consistently

.....Kentucky DT Dewayne Robertson is weighing 321-pounds and running 4.69-4.75 in the forty, as well as throwing up 35+ reps of 225....

DT Rien Long is said to be struggling in pre-combine workouts and has shown limited athletic ability and struggles laterally.....

Kansas State CB Terence Newman is running in the 4.2 areas consistently.....

University of Hawaii OLB Pisa Tinoisamoa is weighing 231-pounds, running mid-high 4.5's on a grass field, and did a personal best 22 reps of 225.....

That would be good news for us- a quality DT, LB, or DB will be there at #48

I don't deny that...anytime teams want to blow a draft choice I have no problem with that.

February 17

(4:00 PM): Top CFL QB off market...Montreal has resigned free agent QB Anthony Calvillo to a new 2-year deal with an option year. Calvillo, who led the Alouettes to their first Grey Cup title in a quarter century last fall, became a free agent on Saturday and had flirted with the idea of giving the NFL a try. Indeed, he had worked out with Pittsburgh earlier this year and reportedly had drawn some interest from other NFL teams looking for help at QB. In the end, though, Calvillo opted to resign with Montreal where he is guaranteed to be the starter.

(12:01 AM): Combines week kicks off Tuesday...GMs, coaches, and scouts from around the NFL are descending on Indianapolis for this week's annual National Scouting Combine which starts tomorrow and runs through next Monday. In fact, the combines, which traditionally ran 4 days, have been expanded this year to a full week. In that time, league personnel people will poke, prod and otherwise try and evaluate 350 top prospects for the 2003 draft. Players have been combined into 4 positional groupings that will each go through 4 days of activities. The combines get underway tomorrow with the RBs, offensive lineman, and kickers; while the defensive linemen start on Wednesday; the QBs, WRs, and TEs get going on Thursday; and the LBs and DBs, the final group to get going, start the process on Friday.

Bengals, Bears continue QB dance...While heading off to Indianapolis, new Cincinnati head coach Marvin Lewis appeared to indicate for the first time that the Bengals have to improve at quarterback. While he says he is still firmly committed to going with veteran journeyman Jon Kitna at the Bengals' helm next fall, Lewis added that "either by the guys here or through the draft or free agency we're going to continue to upgrade the future at QB and bring a competitive situation in here." Given their druthers, though, it appears that the Bengals would still prefer to trade down a few spots and get a top young defensive player, plus some extra picks. If they can't work a deal, though, the Bengals could almost be forced to take USC QB Carson Palmer, though, Lewis has also refused to rule out Michigan State WR Charles Rogers. Its Lewis' contention that "with that first pick you've got to get an impact guy" and Lewis has identified Rogers as one of the few high-impact players in the 2003 draft. The team most often mentioned as a possible trade-down partner for the Bengals and the #1 pick overall is Chicago. However, while Bears' GM Jerry Angelo says he's "committed to wanting to get a QB" he is also saying "Is it with the 4th pick in the draft? I'm not going to commit to that." In fact, while they have several options at the position, the Bears' preferred course of action appears to be still to sign a veteran in free agency, and then trade down themselves from the 4th pick. And while Chicago appears disinterested as a possible trading partner for the #1 pick, one team that has emerged as possibly having some interest in moving up is Washington which has the 13th pick overall and reportedly has some interest in Palmer.

That would be the Bears luck, skip on a QB in round 1 only to have 5-6 chosen before they pick in Rd. 2. I could see all ten teams you list take a QB in the first 3 rounds.

Marcus Trufant is a playa.

I edited the Great Blue post since your comment, EE- has interesting stuff about the Bear's commitment to trading to get palmer- could all be posturing

Like I said in the mock draft we had, I think the Bears want Palmer, and if they do they almost have to trade up to get him. With Detroit and Houston ahead of them already having their QB's of the future, if Cincy passes on Palmer, one of the two of them will certainly trade down with someone like Carolina or Washington.

I don't think the Bears are sold on Leftwich, especially at No. 4.

If they sit at 4 and Palmer and Suggs are gone, they will trade downto 10 or so and get the OT they desperately need.

All eyes will be the on the defensive linemen. Between 10 and 13 defensive linemen could go in the first round. At the combine, the defensive linemen will begin the process of creating an order for drafting. Defensive tackles dominate the proceedings. Defensive coordinators will be drooling over Jimmy Kennedy of Penn State, William Joseph of Miami, Dewayne Robertson of Kentucky, Kevin Williams of Oklahoma State, Jonathan Sullivan of Georgia. Terrell Suggs is clearly the top defensive end in the draft, but he has to convince teams to take him in the top five. Those teams who can't draft Suggs will be looking closely at Jerome McDougle of Miami, Rien Long of Washington State, Michael Haynes of Penn State and Chris Kelsay of Nebraska. Haynes was dominating in the Senior Bowl and may have put himself into the first round.

(Corner)Backs in needs-
Coming off one of the greatest quarterback throwing years in NFL history, teams will spend extra time looking at cornerbacks. It's not considered a great position in this draft, but it's a need for most teams. With Dre Bly of the Rams being the only main option in free agency, defensive coaches may have to use their imagination trying to convince themselves when to gamble on the handful of top cornerbacks available. Terence Newman of Kansas State is the top rated cornerback, and he could gain distance on the pack if he decides to run and comes in under 4.4 seconds in the 40. The hottest rising cornerback is Marcus Trufant of Washington State, who had such a great week at the Senior Bowl that he moved ahead of Andre Woolfolk of Oklahama.

Ditto your comment on QBs, Mel. If there's a run on QBs in R 1 can only be good for the Bills if that means DTs, LBs etc. drop.
