Let's play out a little fantasy scenario.

Here's the deal.
Your the GM of the Buffalo Bills. EVERY player in the NFL is available for the draft and you have the first pick out of all 32 teams.

The ONLY rule is: You are NOT allowed to take a quarterback first overall. Outside of that, you can take any player in the NFL as your top choice.

Who would it be, and why?

I know some people will think I am crazy, but I have two things to say about that.
1) Bite me
2) Let's revisit this in 2-3 years.

My pick is San Francisco rookie tight end Vernon Davis. I think he's going to dominate the TE position and evolutionize it like nobody else ever has. He has a tight end body with WR hands and speed. IMO, he's going to be the Jerry Rice of WR's, the Reggie White of DL and the Lawrence Taylor of LB's.

Antonio Gates is the only TE in the league who can even compare to him and even that's almost unfair. Physically Davis is superior and after Gates there is no one in his strastophere... Davis will change the way an offense approaches the game of football and he's going to be absolutely unstoppable. There is NO way you're going to cover him with a LB or even a safety.

I dont care if you want to label him as a tight end. If I was the Houston Texans I would have taken him FIRST in the draft..

The other players I would consider for the top spot are Polamalu, Peppers, Bentley and Champ Bailey.

I wouldn't consider a RB because there are too many of them where one is clearly better than the rest, same with WR because even though Moss is the best he could become a cancer to my team, and I dont even need to get into T.O.

So my pick is Davis.

I think I would take Ladanian Tomlinson or Larry Johnson, but probably Tomlinson because of his ability to run and catch and make people miss.

Julius Peppers or Dwight Freeney.

1-Defense wins championships.
2-Start with the lines, and build your team out from there.
3-A dominant D-lineman that can stop the run and get to the passer is the most effective weapon against any offense.

Julius Peppers or Dwight Freeney.

1-Defense wins championships.
2-Start with the lines, and build your team out from there.
3-A dominant D-lineman that can stop the run and get to the passer is the most effective weapon against any offense.

I dont disagree with anything you said, and Peppers especially would be very high on my list as well.

I just think that when you have a player who can absolutely CHANGE the game and the way its played, much like White, Taylor and Rice did.. Then you have to take him.

I just have this feeling that in five years people are going to talk about Vernon Davis as one of the best players the game has ever seen.

Vernon Davis isn't going to be catching many passes for your team down the field against me because A-He's either going to have to stay in the backfield to help block Peppers, or, B-Julius is going to get to your QB before he has a chance to find Vernon

First an aside. People would not so pissy with you if you did not include comments like 'Bite me".

Secondly I would say you are crazy (nothing wrong with that) not because you choose a TE but because you picked a man who has played exactly zero games in the NFL. There is no way I would build my team around an unknown, which is exactly what Davis is.

I like the Pepper or Freeny picks. I would also strongly consider Walter Jones. The man is a beast. A dominate LT is a great way to start an dominant offense.

One name not mentioned so far is Randy Moss. His athletic ability is unheard of. His character has improved significantly. If used correctly the man can change a game similar to the way Jerry Rice did for years.

I agree about Walter Jones, the only negative being he's getting up there in age. Even so, he's easily the best tackle in the game today.. I had Bentley on my list because he's younger.

I included Peppers in a list and I think he'd be number two. Freeney is good, but in my opinion is more of a system guy than just a straight-up freak.

I totally forgot to even mention Urlacher, I'd haveto at least consider him.. and just two years ago he was "overated" by some. Ridiculous.
