IRVING, Texas -- Emmitt Smith's status with the Dallas Cowboys will remain in limbo for at least another week.

Smith and team owner Jerry Jones finally have had their long-awaited meeting to discuss whether the running back will return for a 14th season. Their only decision was to keep talking.

"We will meet again, near the end of next week, at which time we will address the future -- in a manner that we believe will serve the best interests of the Dallas Cowboys and Emmitt Smith,'' Jones said in a statement released Tuesday.

Jones called the Monday meeting "very thorough and extensive.''

Smith's agent, Werner Scott, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

If the Cowboys want to bring Smith back, it certainly will be with a restructured contract. His current deal has a base salary of $7 million next season, with a salary-cap figure of $9.8 million. That's a lot for someone who will be 34 and is coming off one of his worst seasons.
