<img src="http://www.billszone.com/images/artwander/artwander002.JPG" border="2" align="left">Bills veep Tom Donahoe probably heard the whispers bouncing from Washington, Atlanta, Miami and other NFL cities who were keeping their fingers crossed that Bills wideout Peerless Price would sneak past the "Franchise Tag" date. If TD didn't put that tag on Price, other teams would come up with a whopping offer that would see $$$$$ signs dancing in Price's eyes and moving vans moving his stuff to another city. If Donahoe didn't make the move, the Bills would be getting zero – zilcho – nada – nic in return – save for a "Nice knowing you" from Price.
<P>
Other interested teams will now have to go back to the drawing board and determine if they want to come up with a huge offer that Buffalo would consider too high. If those same teams make such an offer – and the Bills decide not to match – then Buffalo would receive two first round draft choices from that team.
<P>
It's a win-win situation for the Bills.

Donahoe played his whole card at the right time. Other teams interested in Price will have to shuffle their paste boards several more times, now that they know Buffalo can match any offer.

Actually Art................................you are wrong. The Bills would not have the right to match any offer. Thats the transition tag you're thinking about. :o:

Art Wander.......entertaining..........yes

I know I've heard from other sources that you have the right to match with the franchise too. But i could be wrong. Anyone else know? :feedback:

Artie's a little off calling Donahoe a veep. Donahoe was made team president when he was hired.

Bills tag WR Price...After giving every indication that they might be willing to let WR Peerless Price walk away, Buffalo slapped the franchise tag on their star receiver who was slated to become an unrestricted free agent next week. The Bills, though, would like to get Price, who caught 94 passes for over 1,200 yards in 2002, signed to a long-term deal. If they can't get a deal done, though, the Bills could live with Price accouting for just over $5.0M this coming season, the tender figure for franchised WRs, and see if 2002 second round pick WR Josh Reed can emerge as a quality #2 reciever for 2004.

And with Price tagged there may be some long faces in places like Atlanta and Washington among teams who were hoping to jump into the bidding for a top receiver like the former Tennessee star. Other teams, of course, can still negotiate with Price, but any team signing him to an offer sheet would owe the Bills two #1 picks if Buffalo chose not to match. Teams have until the end of business tomorrow to name players as either franchise or transition players. ...MORE... (http://www.gbnreport.com/index.htm)

"If Donahoe didn't make the move, the Bills would be getting zero – zilcho – nada – nic in return – save for a "Nice knowing you" from Price. "

That sums it up right there!
