He has studied the salary-cap impact of taking a quarterback in the first round. Quarterbacks taken first end up with contracts worth $50 million to $70 million once all the buybacks, escalators and incentives are earned. The Colts' Peyton Manning, for example, is in the sixth year of his six-year deal, and he eats up $15.3 million of cap space and will make $11.3 million this yearMORE (http://espn.go.com/nfl/columns/clayton_john/1511386.html)

15.3 in cap space? :hamrhed:

I don't know if it's so much that he wants to be a Bengal, or if he wants to be the #1 pick in the draft.

If the Bengals stayed at 1 and didn't take him, he'd fall between the 2-5th positions. That's a lot of money to lose.
