The Buffalo Bills (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=buf) have reached an agreement in principle with one of their two first-round draft choices, defensive tackle John McCargo (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=7775). McCargo agreed to a five year deal worth more than $8 million that included $5.2 million in guarantees. The Bills began practice Friday morning, and McCargo will try to get to town for the afternoon practice.

what does "in principle" mean? Can he still reneg on the deal?

DraftBoy

it means he was not there to sign it, so he's still has to give his John Hancock on it.

Great News!! Hopefully Whitner is done before Monday so that he doesn't miss out on the beneficial experience he'll get in training camp.

Great news!

Is it me, or is 5 years a long contract for a rookie?

I think it has something to do with the new CBA. The old CBA guaranteed a team rights to a player for 4 years- after that they could become unrestricted free agents. There wasn't any set rule requiring 4 years, but players want the chance to be UFA's and get that big payday, either from their current team or by moving on to greener pastures.

If I remember correctly, the new CBA does not allow players to become UFA's until after 5 years, so 5 year rookie contracts will become the norm this season.

Hopefully Whitner will sign a 6-year deal.

I think it generally means that he has agreed to the basic terms, but has not yet seen all of the fine print. So he won't officially sign until his agent or lawyer has read it through to be sure there are no landmines in the details.

5 yr rookie contracts mean a holdout. Thats half a career on one contract. Just like Branch seeing his draft class getting paid and him not. Anyhow, under contract is still a good thing.

That contract seems like quite a reach @ this point. What are the Bills thinking?

seems pretty reasonable to me, max of 8 million over 5 years is not expensive for a first rounder.

8 million for a 1st rounder over 5 years.. as opposed to the 10 mill for 4 years we paid scrubs like royal? i think the contract sounds genius.

Hopefully Whitner will sign a 6-year deal. :pray:Good luck on getting 6 years. That's why the Fins haven't signed Allen yet. They want 6 years and his agent doesn't. Stalemate

8 mil's pretty cheap to lock up a first-rounder for five years...that's what I'd be thinking.

Yea but you have to pay pretty much waht other drfat picks are getting in Round 1. That why we had to wait to see NGATA sign so the Bills could see his numbers 1st then can low down a bit becasue McCargo was drafted in the 20's
