When asked what he thinks about his team’s new defense, Buffalo Bills safety Coy Wire tries to measure his words.

But the smile that comes across his face gives him away.

“It’s a high-energy, aggressive, attacking defense,” Wire said of new defensive coordinator Perry Fewell’s Tampa-2 scheme. “I believe that’s the way game should be played. ... I really think it fits our players’ mentalities well.”

High energy and aggressive are two terms often used to describe Wire’s play.

So is it a natural conclusion to say the Tampa-2 is the ideal defense for Wire?

“All I’ll say is I feel very comfortable in this defense,” he said. “I feel it.”

It sounds like he is competing for a starting SS position, even though i'm sure the job will go to Whitner once he signs....but on the bright side for me, i don't think Wire's going to be cut after all.

With Milloy being released this offseason, the strong safety job again came open. But new General Manager Marv Levy and coach Dick Jauron believe competition brings out the best in players, so Wire finds himself in what should soon be a three-way battle for the job with veteran free agent Matt Bowen and as-yet-unsigned first-round pick Donte Whitner.

Mikey, did you notice Wire working with the D at all, or do they just have Bowen in there?

I think it's safe to assume Wire's been working with the D at least some, shelby. Of course, that may change once Whitner gets into camp.

Vincent and Bowen are guaranteed roster spots- Vincent for his experience and Bowen for ST.

Then there's Whitner and Simpson- they're not guaranteed anything but I think it's highly unlikely that either won't make the team.

So that makes Wire the 5th on the depth chart. How many safeties do most teams carry?

what is your obsession with Coy Wire anyway? Do you know him or something? He really hasn't done anything spectacular since he's been here- he's decent at ST and has struggled when he's had to play S.

Yeah but the kid sure can drop the hammer with some monster hits. He is an extremely aggressive player, which consequently gets him in trouble as he is often out of position in coverage. That to me is the problem with Coy Wire because I don't believe he is as slow as people think. I think he needs to work more on the cerebral part of the game, so it is encouraging to here him say that he "feels" this defensive scheme. Don't be so quick to dismiss his value to the team. At worst he is an excellent Special teams player.

If they happen to have a great receiver competition during camp and they want to keep an extra, I would say that Wire is the odd man out. But if a couple of receivers don't show up, Wire will stay on board, just for ST. I have no probem with this... as long as he isn't on the field other than 4th down.
