The New York Jets' running attack might have a new pilot this season for the first time since 1997.
Two sources close to Curtis Martin (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=3164) told the New York Daily News that the running back talked about retirement before deciding to give it a go for another season, and one of the sources told the newspaper "I'd be really shocked if he came back."

Martin was placed on the physically-unable-to-perform list at the start of training camp after he underwent arthroscopic right knee surgery in December. At the time of the surgery, he said he expected to start running again in February. He also said there was no ligament or structural damage.
However, according to several reports out of the New York area, Martin's knee has virtually no cartilage left. "The guy is bone-on-bone on the knee and can't play," a source told Newsday.
The Newark Star-Ledger reported earlier this week that Martin urged the team to draft a running back in case he was not ready for the season.
The No. 4 all-time leading rusher has been squirreled away inside the Jets complex rehabbing his right knee, making it a mystery when he will play again. Even teammates sound spooked when asked about how their teammate is doing.

a majority of all NFL fans respect him, he was one of the most work-aholic style backs. never really mouthed off and he got his work done.

its a shame that this may be the way to go out, and not being able to go out on a vince lombardi trophy run.

as a jet fan, i really hope his body magically becomes healthy, because there is one more blow to an already horribly damaged offense, but if this is indeed the case. HERE, HERE to one of the great ones.

I have to agree w/ the above sentiments. As much as I hate the Jets, it was/is hard to hate Curtis Martin. Always a positive force, great representative of what a NFL player should be. (shoot, sounds like we're talking about him like he's dead, yeesh, lol.)

in a playing sense, that may be true...... i just hope the jets can retain him for maybe a coaching position, because he is a very valuable person.
