I thought I saw Brady looking over his shoulder.

I like the kid too bad he is stuck behind Brady, but I doubt that will last. Free agent = starter for another team

He is only in his second year, so he won't taste unrestricted FA for 3 seasons (2009).

That said, the Pats aren't winning nothing if Brady goes down. He is the straw that stirs the drink. Maybe Cassel will develop, maybe not. Either way he is no replacement for Brady.

Honest truth for a sec I thought you meant he had 5 passing yards and a QB rating of 9. I then realized what you meant.

I supose, however, with JP either scenario is possible.

2 years. His contract was signed before the new CBA. He can be an UFA at 4 years and a RFA after next. From the way he is producing don't be suprised if someone steps up and makes him a rediculous offer the pats can't afford to match. hey its the price of success.

He signed a 3 year deal, so he is under contract though 2007. At that point, with 3 years of service, they can tender him to keep his rights another year. If they tender him at the low-level, the Pats would get a 7th round pick back if they choose not to match. If they use the medium tender, it means the Pats would get a 1st round pick back if they choose not to match. If they tender him high, it would mean a 1st and 3rd round pick in compensation should the Pats choose to match.

That effectively ties him up through the 2008 season, and if the big offer were generated they would get a good draft pick back.

Of course, that all assumes he continues to develop. My guess if he continues to play well when he gets a shot in preseason or the regular season the Pats will try to flip him for draft picks at some point, like Green Bay did with Matt Hasselbach.
