Cobbs was an UDFA who fumbled twice. He probably wasn't going to make the team, what with Dillon, Maroney, and Faulk ahead of him. Plus the Steelers were willing to offer a pick.

Maroney didn't practice this week. I'll be curious to see when he returns to practice.

Cobbs had a strong camp, and he was a nice story. He came to camp on an tryout, and showed enough there that they signed him to a contract. He played real well at camp, but the Pats depth at RB made it a longshot. He deserves to be on a roster, and I'm happy to see Pittsburgh is going to give him that shot.

Maroney's fine. Brady didn't practice last week either, BTW.

The Pats have depth at RB? Dillon is getting old and looked it last year. Faulk seems to be a fumbler and is really only an option as a reciever out of the backfield and Maroney is a rookie.

Yes.

Chad Jackson, who is nursing a hamstring injury.

Willie Andrews, who was dinged against Washington. He actuall practiced late in the week with a red, no-contact jersey. He should be ready for the opener.

David Thomas, also dinged up earlier, but will be ready for the opener.


In addition, Ty Warren and Reche Caldwell were rested, but will play in the opener as well.

Basically, the guys who weren't going to play didn't practice.

RB may be the strongest position on the team.

Dillon is healthy and running over people again. He brings a physical style to the offense which wears defenses down.

Maroney looks better than expected. He reminds me of Edgerrin James when he first came into the league.

Faulk is one of the most under-rated players on the Patriots. He is a key component to their spread packages and probably has the best hands on the team. Look at all the big games the Patriots have won in the last few years, and there are probably 2-3 big plays Faulk made in each game. He is a role player, but he is great in that role.

Patrick Pass is on the PUP until week 7, but he is pretty good for a 4th RB.

As for the others, they're not going to be major players for the Pats this year. And it looks like Jackson is headed the way of most Florida WR's.

Willie Andrews will be the Pats primary return man.

David Thomas will be used as a TE/H-back and will play.

On the play Maroney was hurt, he was tackled in the backfield for a two-yard loss. He immediately got up, jogged to the sideline without a limp and took off his helmet to talk to RB coach Ivan Fears. This was all on TV. He didn't return to the game.

Now, he may have been dinged a little, but it is hard to believe it is anything serious. They just have seen enough from the kid that they didn't feel the need to use him in the last preseason tuneup. The only injuries of concern this week are Chad Jackson's hamstring and Bruschi's wrist. Everyone else should be ready to play. Bruschi says he will be back for the opener, but they may keep him out a week or two to be sure he is OK. Jackson may practice this week, but time will tell.

Since Jackson has missed all of camp, it is hard to say what he will be one way or another. It is hard to imagine him making much of an impact, however, as few rookies do.

As a receiver.

The fumbling thing is overplayed. He has had a few games with costly fumbles, but nothing that overshadows his big plays. Faulk is a big part of what the Pats do in their spread sets, because he is so good on draws and screens. He also has the versatility to split out wide and operate as a WR. They aren't as good in those sets without him, and it is a key component of their offense.
