Saturday:
Byron Leftwich actually had a broken lower leg as expected. This will hurt him a lot as he has had problems since the 2001 season. Leftwich is out of the top 10 unless his pro day is a great success.
Rashean Mathis threw up 22 reps, he is really impressing
Washington State CB Marcus Trufant has added some pounds since the Senior Bowl and is now at 199
SDSU WR, Kassim Osgood may be the biggest WR (minus Teyo Johnson). Osgood has showed lots of progression from the beginning of the year and could sneak into the end of round two.
As previously thought, WR Kelley Washington is checking out okay at the combine. However, the final decision will come on draft day as to what teams believe about his health.
As of right now, we think the Ravens will be picking #10, we should know more about all the coin tosses very shortly.
Lots of players are being asked to show off their versatility this week:
Kelsay, Suggs, McDoulgle, Pierson and D. White as OLB. Ant. Adams and C. Cole are trying some OL this week. Seneca Wallace is getting some looks at WR.
Eric Steinbach pulled off a 35'' vertical jump.
Andre Johnson from Miami came in at 6'2'', 230 pounds
Dave Ragone isn't helping himself this week with his 6'3'' and 249 frame
Carson Palmer came in at 6'4'', 232.
Terry Pierce, while not looking very strong turned in 28 reps.

Saturday:
Miami Dolphins senior vice president of football operations Rick Spielman said on Saturday that the team is looking to bolster the receiver area on the team through the NFL Draft. “It’ll be something that we’ll look at in the draft,” Spielman said. However, he isn’t sure whether they’ll be looking at a receiver on the first or second day of the draft due to possible changes on roster before the draft. “It’s hard to predict because you don’t know what you’ll have going into the draft.” Spielman said he feels the receiver class this year is rather deep. The team is open to bigger or smaller receivers, as the bigger wide outs would serve on the outside while a bigger or smaller receiver could be used in the slot position. “Norv likes the bigger type receivers on the outside,” Spielman said.

The St. Petersburg Times reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden said the team will use free agency and the NFL Draft to improve its offensive line.

The Florida Times-Union reports the Jacksonville Jaguars will most likely not select a QB with their 8th overall selection in the NFL Draft. James Harris, the Jaguars vice president of player personnel, said Friday the team won’t even interview a QB at the NFL Combine

Kansas State CB Terence Newman said on Sunday that he weighed in at 189 pounds at the NFL Combine. He played at 185 pounds last season. He didn’t do the bench press on Saturday but has decided to go through all of the additional drills on Monday. “I feel like I’m in a position to do some great things,” Newman said. He said he had an old shoulder injury checked out by doctors on Saturday, but it wasn’t anything to be worried about.

Mlive.com reports Detroit Lions head coach Steve Mariucci is talking to as many first-round NFL Draft candidates as possible because he is uncertain where the Lions might select. There is a possibility the team could trade down to acquire more draft picks or a veteran player.

Updating previous reports, the St. Petersburg Times reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers might have an interest in drafting Miami (Fla.) RB Willis McGahee. The team doesn’t have a pressing need for a RB, and they could afford to sit and wait until McGahee (knee) recovers.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports Penn State DE Michael Haynes likely hurt his draft position on Saturday with a poor performance at the NFL Combine. “He was just awful,” said an agent who watched the work out. “He shouldn’t have worked out.” Haynes ran one 40-yard dash at a time of 4.88 seconds, but didn’t run a second because of a hurt quadriceps. He was able to finish the rest of the drills, but just didn’t fare too well. His performance likely dropped him from the end of the first round into the second.

Boiller weighed 234, 9% body fat, ran 4.59 and a 4.61. Also verticaled 35" and had a 9-9" broad jump. Clarley the better athlete over Leftwich even when he is healthy. Boller may be the #2 rated QB on some boards(including mine).

One quarterback who looked good, though he did not throw the ball, was California's Kyle Boller. Weighing in at 234 pounds, Boller's body fat was less than 10% and he quickly moved his lean frame across the RCA Dome, timing a pair of forties in the 4.6-range, faster then most of the receivers!

Except for the injured Byron Leftwich, all the top passers took part in Sunday's workout and none were as effective as Dave Ragone. Coming off a terrible senior campaign at Louisville, this was the big lefty's last opportunity to make a statement and he did just that. Except for one poor throw, all his passes were right on the mark as Ragone displayed excellent timing and accuracy throughout the entire session. His placement of the all-important deep out was dead on target and Ragone leaves Indianapolis knowing he greatly improved his draft stock.

Heisman Trophy winner Carson Palmer showed well and did nothing to hurt his status as potentially the draft's initial choice. Chris Simms threw accurate passes in the short field but sprayed his throws outside of the 15-yard mark. Likewise Ken Dorsey's lack of arm strength was apparent and he had great difficulty getting the ball deep.

Lastly, Rex Grossman was inconsistent throughout practice and though he displayed skills in the deep passing game, this was not the workout the Florida junior needed to vault him into the middle of the initial frame.

A list of those who improved their stock and those who dropped. e.g.

Decliners
"QB Ken Dorsey (Miami): Scouts kept trying to find nice things to say about him and basically they ran out of ways to keep from bashing his lack of arm strength. His throwing performance Sunday was disastrous and, that sterling college record aside, one has to wonder now if he'll even be drafted. Great kid but not even a good prospect."

Texans interested in Pace...There is an unconfirmed story circulating at Indianapolis as the combines wind down that Houston would be prepared to offer St. Louis the 3rd pick overall at the 2003 draft for OT Orlando Pace, on whom the Rams have applied a franchise tag. The Texans, of course, are looking to shore up a very leaky offensive line that allowed rookie QB David Carr to be sacked a league-record 76 times last fall. The Texans are hoping that veteran OT Tony Boselli will be able to play this fall, but after missing most of the past two seasons with injuries there are no guarantees whether Boselli will play again or for how long. Meanwhile, its hard to image the Rams parting with Pace, one of the premier offensive linemen in the NFL, for a measly first rounder, even a 'lottery' pick. The Texans, though, could make the Rams life difficult by signing Pace to an offer sheet that St. Louis, which will not have much salary cap space heading into the free agent signing period, would have trouble matching. In that scenario, if the Rams didn't match, the Rams would then be entitled to two #1 picks from Houston.

Combines conclude today...The week long scouting combines wrap up in Indianapolis later today with the LBs and DBs on tap for their on-field workouts. And while most of the elite prospects for the 2003 draft have opted not to workout over the course of the week, Kansas State CB Terence Newman, the highest -rated CB this year and a potential top 5 pick, will put in a full workout today including running the 40.

Penn State DE has lousy workout...NFL people keep telling prospects that they can't hurt their draft chances with a poor workout in Indianapolis. Penn State DE Michael Haynes is hoping they were telling the truth. Haynes came to the combines off a dominating week at last month's Senior Bowl, but had a very disappointing workout over the weekend. Haynes posted a slow 4.88 40 time, in the process hurting a quad muscle. That precluded him from running a second 40; Haynes also reportedly didn't look very athletic or explosive in other drills, although its not clear just how much the damaged quad held him back. Haynes will have another chance to impress scouts at Penn State's on-campus workout on March 10th, but that doesn't leave him much time to recuperate from the quad pull.

No WR - yet - for ISU QB...According to Neil Stratton of Inside the League, at least one top NFL GM was disappointed that Iowa State QB Seneca Wallace did not work out as a receiver at this week's combines in Indianapolis. While he has a decent arm and outstanding mobilty, Wallace at 5-10 is considered by many teams to be too short to play QB on Sundays and they would like to see him try other options. Wallace, though, appears to want to stay a QB at least as long as he

From ESPN's 6pm (EST) Sportscenter

Rising
Kyle Boller
"He has solitified himself as a top 15 pick"

Dave Ragone
"Ragone showed a big arm with accuracy"

Chris Simms
"Many teams see him as a second roudner"

Falling
Rex Grossman
"He came into the combine as the #3 guy on many boards, but Grossman could now fall all the way to the 6th quarterback taken"

Ken Dorsey
"Many believe he is a nonprospect"

Seneca Wallace
"He still hasn't done enough to convince scouts that he's a pro prospect"

Others:
Justin Fargas
"Described as a workout warrior. Fargas may have catipulted himself into the first round."

Terrance Newman
"Newman could be a top 5 pick"

From Chris Mortenson(sp?)
Many scouts said that Carson Palmer looks a little mechanical and throws a low ball.

Byron Leftiwch has a chance to surpass Palmer with a good workout, which i feel he'll have.

Simms could go anywhere from top 10 to top of 2nd round. He has the arm, and is faster and more mobile than thought. 3 or 4 teams are very high on him. He'll go no later than the top of 2nd

On Ken Dorsey
"It was pretty bad. Someone used the word pitiful. Has a lot of respect though. Some personel men felt bad for dorsey, as he was visably upset after his workout.

News from today and yesterday from KFFL's nflnews

John Clayton of ESPN.com reports OL Eric Steinbach of Iowa, a guard who can move to tackle because he's 6-foot-6, had a 35 1/2 inch vertical jump at the NFL Combine.

John Clayton of ESPN.com reports Stanford S Colin Branch ran a 4.39 in the 40-yard dash on Monday. He helped his draft stock with his effort

John Clayton of ESPN.com reports LB Kawiki Mitchell of South Florida is a big, 250-pound middle linebacker who ran an impressive 4.65 at the NFL Combine. He helped his stock with his effort.

Houston Texans coach Dom Capers told Dave Richard of NFL.com his team is not looking to move up in the NFL Draft. When asked if the team had any talks about moving up, Capers replied, "No, we have not discussed that whatsoever. The only discussions have been with people that want to come up to the third pick because they have a player in mind."

Updating previous stories, Len Pasquarelli of ESPN.com reports Louisville QB Dave Ragone did a good job at impressing people during the passing drills. Some scouts said he arguably had the best performance of all, throwing the football very accurately. Ragone got into rhythm and made some excellent throws according to scouts. He may have made some teams re-evaluate his capability.

Updating previous stories, Don Banks reports for CNN/SI.com, Miami QB Ken Dorsey isn’t very highly touted at the combine, despite his amazing 37-2 college winning record as a starter. An AFC personnel man, speaking on conditions of anonymity, had this to say: "I don't want to rip the guy. The guy won a lot of ballgames. But the guy isn't very good, I don't think. I wouldn't draft the guy. The guy can't throw. It's that simple."

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the Houston Texans might be interested in trading their No. 3 pick in the first round of the NFL Draft for St. Louis Rams OT Orlando Pace. Pace was recently tagged the team’s franchise player.

Bill Williamson for the Pioneer Press reports Minnesota Vikings owner Red McCombs and head coach Mike Tice have both said the team could trade down from it’s No. 7 pick in the first round to acquire additional draft choices. Tice did say, though, that he doesn’t want to drop below pick No. 12 if possible.

The Rocky Mountain News reports the Denver Broncos are making their defensive line a priority this off-season. They will be looking at both the DT and DE positions, but especially want to add a pass-rushing DE to their arsenal. The team could also be looking to add a few DEs to the mix because they want to move DE Trevor Pryce to DT on passing situations to apply more pressure up the middle.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports the Chicago Bears want to upgrade their TE position, and have made it a position of priority this off-season. “We’re going to look hard at that position,” said Bears general manager Jerry Angelo. “We want to make it a position of strength.”

.

Gil Brandt reports for NFL.com Texas QB Chris Simms ran in the mid-4.7s at the NFL Combine Sunday and he really looked good throwing the ball.

Gil Brandt reports for NFL.com Cal QB Kyle Boller ran well at the NFL Combine Sunday. He ran in the low 4.6s. Brandt said Boller really helped himself a lot with his workout. As noted earlier though, he did not throw. Brandt said Boller was very, very good.

Virginia WR Billy McMullen, Jr. (elbow), on Saturday at the NFL Combine, said he’s spoken with the Buffalo Bills

Georgia LB Boss Bailey said on Saturday at the NFL Combine that he spoke with eight teams, including the Minnesota Vikings.

Roger Brown of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports Ohio State LB Matt Wilhelm wants to be a Cleveland Brown. "I would absolutely love to be drafted by the Browns," Wilhelm says. "Playing in my hometown wouldn't put any more pressure on me at all. I'd look forward to it, actually

Len Pasquarelli reports for ESPN.com the Cincinnati Bengals are finding a tough market for their attempts to trade the No. 1 pick in the April NFL Draft. Too many teams in need of help at the quarterback position, like Chicago which owns the fourth overall selection, are wary of paying big money to QB Carson Palmer, who has had only one big season in college. Bengals rookie head coach Marvin Lewis almost certainly would like to deal down from the first pick and take a lineman or a cornerback.
