</TD><TD>http://www.abc.net.au/news/img/spacer.gif</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><!-- End Main Image -->The long-held belief that dolphins are one of the smartest things in the ocean has been blown right out of the water.
Geoff Weir, the Conservation Director at the Australian Dolphin Research Centre, says that they really aren’t all that clever.

He says that even though dolphins have a large brain, a lot of their grey matter is probably set aside for processing sound.

“They can send clicks out into the water, listen to those and build up sound pictures just like a medical ultrasound,” Geoff told 720 Morning presenter Geoff Hutchison.

In fact, Mr Weir says, a dolphin’s brain is more like a bat.

“Their brain has a very similar structure to a bat’s brain that uses sonar in a very similar way, “ he said.

In fact, the brains of the adorable mammals of the deep are so poorly organised, they don't have the intelligence to jump out of enclosures - unlike goldfish.

Research by Wits University Professor Paul Manger shows that the dolphin is dumb. Its brain may be large, but only so that it can generate heat to keep warm.

Or maybe they're smart enough to not want to land on the concrete outside of the tank.

That can't possibly be it.
