All: The new Billszone site with the updated software is scheduled to be turned on Tuesday, May 21, 2024. The company that built it, Dynascale, estimates a FOUR HOUR shut down, from 8pm Pacific, (5pm Eastern) while they get it up and running. Nobody will be able to post in any forum until they are done. Afterwards, you may need to do a web search for the site, as old links will not work, because the site is getting a new IP address. Please be patient. If there are bugs, we will tackle them one at a time. Remember the goal is to be up and running with no glitches by camp. Doing this now assures us of that, because it gives us all summer to get our ducks in a row. Thank you!
By all accounts Mangold is playing pretty well, i was so praying he would have been a Bill.
That being said I am not unhappy with any of our picks. Williams was a great pickup as was McCargo.
Regarding Mangold, it depends on what week it is and who is reporting. While Mangold had a good game against the Bills, according to the reports that I read in the NY Daily News and the local paper here, he struggled against the Pats and was OK against Tenn. He's going to be a stud down the road, but, like any rookie, he's had his ups and downs thus far. He's gotten a lot of playing time because Teague got hurt, but the Jets were reported to be very anxious to get Teague back before the Jets played the Bills because of the way Mangold struggled against the Jets--they wanted some insurance in case he didn't bounce back from that.
As for McCargo and Williams, they're coming along--having their ups and downs, too, which is to be expected. If you just watch the games on TV or from the stands you might not think so, but, if you look at the play by play of last week's game on NFL.com, you will see that Williams and McCargo were in on a number of plays. I watched the game, while also participating in the BZ game day thread and didn't realize that they were in on some of the plays that NFL.com shows them being in on (ie, McCargo is credited with flushing Pennington on the sack by Kelsay, etc.).
What you have to realize is that there aren't too many DTs who come into the NFL and dominate right out of college. Just take a look at the stats and how Williams and McCargo stack up against Ngata and Bunkley:

Given the amount of playing time that they all have gotten, pretty much the same numbers.
Now compare those numbers to the rookie year numbers of some DTs that you may have heard of:

Yes, you can find DTs who had more prolific rookie seasons, but my point is that just because a DT does not dominate and put up big numbers as a rookie, that does not mean that the guy is going to be a bust or that he won't end up being a Pro Bowl quality DT. McCargo, Williams, Ngata and Bunkley are all of 3 games into their rookie seasons--that's hardly enough time to judge what kind of players they are going to turn out to be. Just give it some time--and I don't mean just a couple more games!--and let's see how these guys turn out.
Those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it. And, thus it was that they surrendered their freedom; not with a bang, but without even a whimper.
Lineman in general take longer to develop. Occasionally you'll get the stud DE who comes in like hellfire and rips everything up. But for the most part OL/DL take a year or two to come to form.

I think the same can be said for any position at this level. You know something for 2-4 years in college and then you are asked to change everything about the way you know about how to play football. Only natural.
