    NFL rookies hit-and-miss proposition

    Kamerion Wimbley leads Cleveland with three sacks, and massive Haloti Ngata has anchored the Baltimore defense and has a 60-yard interception return. Manny Lawson has two sacks for the 49ers; Ernie Sims leads Detroit with 35 tackles; and Michael Huff of Oakland and Donte Whitner of Buffalo have been starting at safety. Whitner has been a standout after the Bills were criticized for taking him eighth overall when he was generally ''considered'' a late first-rounder.     These articles never get it guite right. By saying that Williams is starting over McCargo - instead of Anderson - it makes McCargo sound like a disappointment. Actually, both Williams and McCargo are playing well in the DT rotation.
    Should have known, way back in 1960 when we drafted Richie Lucas Number 1, that this would be a long, hard ride. But who could have known it would be THIS bad?
