All of those teams sucked too.

Their coaches needed to be fired and QB's cut.

This is the worst Bills team ever and Dick Jauron is the worst coach in NFL history.

Very good, guys!

To add what Skooby so eloquently said...All these Bills teams were playoff teams, with the exception of 1987's Indy strike game. (Sorry, just had to throw that one in there for ****s and giggles!)

Even as the AFC's powerhouse, we occasionally had a clunker or two. This is the NFL. It's going to happen from time to time.

The measure of a team, is how they pick themselves up, and respond in the following weeks.

I disagree.

We have had more than our share of Godawful teams.

This team is no where near as bad as 84-5 or 67-8

I think this week was a little different than just a bad game. All teams have bad games. We were intimidated this week. It really brings into question who on our team really believes in themselves. I can't wait until next week but I will not at all be surprised to see Detriot beat us.

Let's look at some of those years clunkers, shall we?

1967:

Boston 23 Buffalo 0
Houston 20 Buffalo 3

1968:

Oakland 48 Buffalo 6
Houston 30 Buffalo 7
Houston 35 buffalo 6

1971:

Minnesota 19 Buffalo 0
Baltimore 43 Buffalo 0
San Diego 20 Buffalo 3
Miami 34 Buffalo 0
Baltimore 23 Buffalo 0

1984:

St. Louis 37 Buffalo 7
Denver 37 Buffalo 7
Miami 38 Buffalo 7
Cincinnati 52 Buffalo 21

1985:

NY Jets 42 Buffalo 3
Indianapolis 49 Buffalo 17
San Diego 40 Buffalo 7
NY Jets 27 Buffalo 7
Miami 28 Buffalo 0

And those are just the "greatest" hits!

EEs point is well taken. This team is nowhere near as bad as some of it's predicessors.

A bad game is going to happen from time to time for everybody.

The 1991 loss to KC was a monday night game, We came in all high and mighty and got beat pretty good. I was sitting at Holiday twin rinks up stairs watching the game and having a few beers.

Thank you, O esteemed Historian, for reminding us that even in our BEST years, we still got our asses kicked.

This is an EXCELLENT reminder for all the gloom and doom people out there.

One crappy game does NOT mean that we are finished.

I, for one, am still very optimistic about this season. We can treat this ass-kicking by Da Bears in one of two ways..

1. We realize that we aren't yet an elite NFL team, and come back hard and kick the Lions ASS! or...
2. We get discouraged and go into a shell, and get our asses handed to ourselves repeatedly during this season.

Let's look at this as an anomaly and go with #1.

GO BILLS!!!!

Some additional history - since the merger, the Bills have had 16 winning seasons (8 in the Levy era) out of 36, which is 44%. So you're right, the sky isn't falling. It's been on the ground for most of the Bills' history. :;

Please....go root for someone else.

I've heard that the Bears are gonna be pretty good this year. Maybe they need someone like you to jump on their bandwagon.

I've been a Bills fan for over 40 years. Yes it's true that they have flat out sucked for many of those years, but I stand behind them, and don't take every opportunity to bash them.

This post reminds me of Red Sox "fans", who love to revel in misery.

Life is too short for that kind of bull****.

Leypoldt missed 3 FG's and the Bills lost by 5 on MNF against the fish.

Saban was so PO'ed on the radio after the game, and cut Leypoldt the next day.

I agree with the overall premise of this thread.

It seems to suggest, "OK, so we got our asses kicked by a great team. Sucks. But even a few playoff caliber teams get devastated at some point during the season too."

Here are some of Buffalo's most recent examples of prolific blowout losses, despite making the playoffs.

Week 10, 1998 // 34-12 Jets over Bills in the Meadowlands.

Week 1, 1999 // 31-14 Colts over Bills in Indy.

The Bills were playoff caliber teams both seasons, but they couldn't escape one of the most tried & true football cliche's of all time (also the most irritating).

"... on any given Sunday!"

Mind you, the Bills team of '98 avenged their loss to the Jets by whooping New England & Indianapolis in two straight weeks.

Also mind you, the Bills team of '99 avenged their loss to the Colts by rolling up 4 straight victories.

How the Bills come out on Sunday & play against th Lions is going to say a lot about how the Bills react to adversity, something most good playoff teams do well.

I'm cynical enough to accept that the Bills aren't playoff worthy this season, but a positive bounceback would do a hell of a lot for the team's psyche.

The schedule eases up toward the middle, if the Bills want to make any kind of run it has to start now.

Nice job. Hist :D.

I disagree with the strike year game against Indy being 'just for ****s and giggles', though. The Bills were good that year to start off, got screwed by the strike, and didn't have the character to recover for the remainder of the year. Pretty significant, IMO.

We'll see what this team is possibly made of next week.

Terrible year...what they refer to when they say the wheels fell off.

Lost Rashad to Seattle, no compensation.
Let Toomay walk.
Simpson held out until September 12th.
Traded Earl Edwards.
Opened on MNF against the fish, lost Braxton for the season.
Replaced Leyplodt with Benny Ricardo, replaced Ricardo with Jakowenko.
Saban resigned.
Lost Fergy for season with a back injury.
OJ ejected in New England for fighting.
Game up most points in a single game to the Colts in finale, 58.

And still Pat McGroder is on the Wall of Fame.

Historian

I listed it because believe it or not, despite the fact that it was with replacement players, it still goes down on the books as the third largest margin of defeat in team history.

Chicago 31 Buffalo 13
NY Giants 20 Buffalo 6
Miami 45 Buffalo 7

I remember leaving the Miami game that was on MNF, stuck in parking lot traffic listening to Lou Saban on the post game show. Leypoldt had missed three FG's and we lost by 5. He was soooo pissed. Cut him the next day before he even brought anybody in.
