There's always been some truth to the notion that Buffalo sports fans don't get fully involved with the Sabres until the Bills season is over.
But that's certainly not the case this year. I wasn't in town for the early days of the franchise, but I can't recall a time when hockey interest was so great this early in a season. Sabres fever arrived with a sudden urgency this year, like a major snowstorm on the 12th day of October. This could be the year when the old maxim gets turned on its ear, when the Sabres are so compelling they reduce the Bills to an afterthought. Buffalo fans have only so much emotional energy.
