In the first move toward what figures to be the total revamping of their quarterback corps, the Chicago Bears on Wednesday released veteran Jim Miller, ESPN.com has learned.

Miller, who in 2001 led Chicago to a 13-3 record and its first divisional title since 1990, was still rehabilitating from shoulder and foot surgeries. There might be a grievance filed in the case, with Miller possibly asserting he did not have sufficient time to recover.

"It's a shock, but I guess the Bears did what they felt they had to do," said agent Joe Linta.

The move saves the Bears just $300,000 under the salary cap and Miller will still count $1.6 million against the 2003 spending limit.

The Bears dumped Miller 'cause he sucks.
All he ever could throw were wobbly ducks.

The odd thing about all of this is that the Bears only save $300k on their cap by releasing him. Jerry Angelo (Bear GM, in the running for the Mike Smith Horrible GM award) said that they released Miller to truly open the way for a FA to come in. They didn't want to be answering questions about where Jim Miller stood.

I obviously like Jim Miller, he always played with a lot of heart, but he is so smashed up now he may be done. Hopefully he can get a clipboard job somewhere and get healthy.

The Bears also cut Big Cat Williams, the last player left who played for Ditka in Chicago. They get a substantial cap savings from that, and he is probably done as well.

A day after being released by the Bears, quarterback Jim Miller says he plans on filing a grievance against the team.

In a Thursday interview with Sporting News Radio's James Brown, Miller says doctors misdiagnosed his shoulder injury as tendinitis, which turned out to be a torn rotator cuff after further examination by MRI specialists.

"It's tough right now, because I'm damaged goods," Miller said of his free-agent future....more (http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl/articles/20030227/459653.html)
