i was watching the jets game last week...... and during the game one of the players helmets hit the ref........ now in case of the ref having to "leave" the game, do they have ready replacements, or do they run one man short??

I think they have a group of other sightless, hearing impaired and mentally challenged people ready to go in.

cute..... i was just wondering if it was like baseball, or something where sometimes they have backups, and other times they just run a man down.....

In Patriot games, they send in one of their assistant coaches to sub. Just so there's no disparity in their "preferred" calls.

I think the game resumes with "one ref" down.

I am almost positive they continue a man down

I'm sure it depends. When multiple teams have bye weeks there are more refs to go around. When all teams are playing they probably don't have backups.

It's kind of like the playoffs for baseball and hockey, they carry a "taxi squad". There is someone there too fill in if someone goes down.

I wonder if their "second string" would do a better job.......
