      Breaking News: Emmitt Smith cut

      From ESPN:

IRVING, Texas -- Emmitt Smith, the leading rusher in NFL history, was released Thursday after 13 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys.

Smith said he's not ready to retire.

"In my mind, I think I'm a 1,300-yard back, and I will be out to prove that,'' Smith said at a news conference with team owner Jerry Jones.

He was released to make way for a younger, cheaper running back for the Cowboys, who have been 5-11 for the last three seasons. It's the first major roster shakeup since Bill Parcells took over as coach, although Jones has made it clear it was his decision.

Emmitt's time in Dallas is done

The more Emmitt Smith thought about it, the more he realized what had to be done. It was time to leave the Dallas Cowboys after 13 seasons.

Rather than put owner Jerry Jones in the awkward position of cutting the leading rusher in NFL history, Smith volunteered to be released. His departure came Thursday, the eve of the free agent signing period.

But we probably haven't seen the last of Smith.

"I still have a love and passion for the game," he said, dousing any talk of retirement. "I think I'm a 1,300-yard back, and I will be out to prove that."

Panthers, Bucs possible options for Smith

Less than a minute into the first question he fielded at a Thursday afternoon news conference, Emmitt Smith made clear his intention to continue playing in the NFL, and emphasized that retirement is not an option.

"In my heart, I'm still a 1,300-yard back," said Smith, who has exceeded the number seven times in 13 seasons, "and I still want to prove that."

The question is where and if Smith, who turns 34 in May, will get the chance to add to his league-record rushing total. The best-guess answer: Probably, if the finances can be worked out, in Tampa Bay or Carolina.
