I think that 5 minutes is way to short to settle anything, it's like 8.5% of what was just played. We really do need to have an extra period and then go to a shootout to settle it, if necessary.

What do you all think?

Maybe 10 mins, but that is the most

why only 10? i say 20. it shows who REALLY wants the win. or how about sudden death for REAL. game goes until someone scores, there are no periods..no time limit. teams get 2 timeouts each just in case it goes on a while

Ummm most teams fly out the night of a game to go out on the road, the game can't go on forever.

Teams also share arenas with basketball and need the time to set up the court if there is a game the next day.

So does that mean we have to cut short an event? Besides basketball, how many events happen in major cities between jan-may?

The thinking with OT was, about 1/3rd of playoff OT games end pretty quick. Toss in a guaranteed point, take off an attacker- (4 on 4) and you can settle a number of awful "ties" that used to plague the NHL.

5 minutes is just fine. I like the shootout if no one can resolve it. No one wants 3 1/2 hour games- especially players- if they have 3 road games in 4 nights.

West coast teams would suffer the greatest.

A place like Madison Square Garden or Boston Garden is used 5-6 nights a week some weeks

SO are exciting, and the NHL is trying to attract more fans.. that is why OT is so short IMO

5 Mins is too short now, but its to long when we play and trvel and play again the next nite...

Drop the OT Period all together and just do 5 Man Shootouts

I would rather they do 5 on 5 ten minute OTs then the shootout. I guess the players are happier this way.

HSBC Arena may have less going on than say, Madison Square Garden, but all the Arenas are multiple use. The NHL isn't a big enough money maker to support an arena all on their own....and even if it was, it'd be wasteful.

yeah Lacrosse does alot of arean stuff now,

i just think its dumb that the AHL does 5 Man Shootouts, and the NHL Does 3, stupid

Do away with OT all together I like seeing the Shootouts, Shootouts are the best thing the New NHL came up with. I hate OT's

Shootsouts show individual skill. What does it have to do with the game that was played hard for, for that 2 hours??

It shows who you have and experts will end up being created just for this scenario, just like kozlov.

Thier is also injury fears. Increasing OT will increase injuries.

I agree 5 minutes is a bit short. 1/2 a period would be OK.

However the shootout is still a fun portion of the game, and resolves plenty of ties. You have to have offensive and goaltending skills to win a shootout and thier is a lot thrills and a lot less chance of injury.

i personally like the 5-man ahl shootout....... especially it will give ya an extra chance, or two especially if say briere got robbed by the pipe, it will give max, or vanek a chance with not as much pressure.... then again, some players live for that 1 on 1 type of deal.....

nhl should be 5 man

How About 3 Man Offense Relay (all 3 PLayers Must touch the Puck, Versus 2 Defensemen and the Goalie?) 3 To 5 Rounds.

I think they figured that 5 minutes was the most you could play without resurfacing the ice. Anything longer and you'd add on a 15 minute intermission.

It's fine the way it is. I would even be ok with junking the OT and go right to a shootout.
