(WGR 550)- With Henrik Tallinder out for 1-2 months, the Sabres needed to clear salary cap room to call up a replacement.

They did that by placing concussed center Tim Connolly on long-term injured reserve, which clears up nearly $2 million in cap room, leaving Buffalo $2.805 million under the cap.

Connolly's cap number is $2.9 million, and the Sabres were just $95,000 under the cap before the move,at $43.905 overall.

When can Connolly be taken off this IR?

I would love Paille to come up and play.

This long term thing doesn't sound very good at all.

Long Term Means No Connolly Till at Least March

And March means he won't play at all this year.

I heard that long term means that Connolly has to sit out for ten games.

Except in the case of bona fide long-term injury (injuries that sideline a player for a minimum of 24 days and 10 games) to one or more of a club's players, Club payrolls will never be permitted to be below the minimum or in excess of the maximum. Clubs at or near the upper limit that have players who incur a bona fide long-term injury will be entitled to replace up to the full value of the injured player's NHL salary (even if such salary would result in the club's team salary exceeding the upper limit). The "replacement salary" will not count against the club's upper limit but will count against the League-wide players' share. Upon return of the injured player, the team must come into immediate compliance with the requirements of the payroll range.

I could interpret this two ways...

1) Connelly missed the first ten games of the season and thus allowed Buffalo to become eligible for the cap exception. He can come back at any time, but at that point the Sabres have to become compliant with the cap again.

2) Connelly must sit out 24 days or 10 games, at which point he is eligible to return to the roster and Buffalo at that time has to be within the cap limits.

I'm leaning toward #1, as #2 would allow a loophole that encourages stashing players on IR and stacking a roster.

it looks like the 10 game 24 day rule is what defines the bona fide long term injury not what he has to sit out.

He can come back any time he wants at which time we have to come into compliance of the cap. This is nothing but a cap move to work on our depth. I'd like to see Connely come back in February but we'll see.

All the same, this is certainly not a step in the right direction of him getting back on the ice. I really hope that three year 9million dollar deal wasn't wasted.

Any player added to the roster after placing a player on LTIR must be waiver eligible or a player on your roster is waiver eligible....

Doesn't Tallinder's injury count too? He will miss 20-25 games as well

Only if the Sabres put him on it.........but his injury does qualify

What does waiver eligible mean? I thought all players could be waived:bigwave:

It was a terrible idea to sign a player this prone to concussions for that much. Best thing we can do is trade him elsewear for something at least useful. And we arn't hurting without him either, we are 11-0-1. He can go, and free up cap room.

Maybe we can afford Drury and perhaps make a deal with Briere... Wishful thinking, but I sure hope so.

It's not Connolly's fault that he's having concussion problems plus the Sabres did the right thing giving him that type of :$: and we can't do anything with Briere until Jan 1st

Connoly has always had concussion problems. He was told at the college level that his concussions could end his career, even before the NHL.

Its not about whos fault it is, its if hes worth it and if we should keep him. Its nothing personal. He should not be here anymore. Cap room from him being gone could have gotten Briere to a long term contract. But no reason to fret, all this will really matter come January.
