Chiefs reach deal with QB Green

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (February 27, 2003 8:48 p.m. EST) - Quarterback Trent Green signed a seven-year, $50 million contract with Kansas City on Thursday that will enable the Chiefs to save salary cap money.

Much of that money will be used to shore up their league-worst defense.

"I think it worked out well with both sides," said Green, who passed for 3,690 yards and 26 touchdowns last season. "I do think from that salary cap-wise, it is very friendly in terms that we can go after some free agents now. But it also secures things for me and my family."

Green's agent, Jim Steiner, said the signing bonus will be $11.25 million. Green had been due an $8 million roster bonus by 3 p.m. Friday, a bonus would have caused the Chiefs some major salary cap trouble. That's not the case with the signing bonus, which can be spread over the length of the new deal.
