Zone Blocking Scheme..

Can anyone explain how the zone blocking scheme works? I know Denver, Ravens and GreenBay use it, and it seems to be very successful with the run game.

Lineman are responsible for blocking an area as opposed to a specific person. If there is no one to block in the designated area at the line of scrimmage, they can move into another area either along the line or upfield. Instead of a running play being designed to hit a specific hole, it gives the RB more responsibility to discern where the hole actually is, and hit it.

Think of it as Zone Offense instead of Zone Defense. Very effective if you want to run, it gives the back a chance to stretch the field and find a hole.

Atlanta who is the most potent running scheme in the NFL runs this to near perfection. I would guess a reason we dont run it is because we lack the personell to. Outside of Peters and Fowler, we dont have many real athletic pulling lineman. Especially at the Guard posistion where it is most important. Say for instance you wanted to look to get this instituted, youd want to look at these players in the draft this year;

OT Joe Staley
OG Justin Blalock
OG Mike Jones

These are some of the more athletic run blocking lineman in the league.
