    mathis hurt on opening kickoff

Atlanta safety Kevin Mathis was held overnight at a hospital for observation after injuring his neck on the opening kickoff Sunday in Detroit's 30-14 win over the Falcons.

Atlanta Falcons safety Kevin Mathis was strapped to a backboard and carted off the field after being injured on the opening kickoff of Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions. A press-box announcement said that Mathis had a neck injury, but had feeling and movement in all of his extremities. He will not return to the game.
Mathis was hurt while tackling Lions kick returner Eddie Drummond. He appeared to drive his head into Drummond's hip and remained on the Ford Field turf for several minutes.
