Atlanta Falcons (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=atl) safety Kevin Mathis (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4110) was strapped to a backboard and carted off the field after being injured on the opening kickoff of Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions. A press-box announcement said that Mathis had a neck injury, but had feeling and movement in all of his extremities. He will not return to the game.
Mathis was hurt while tackling Lions kick returner Eddie Drummond (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6182). He appeared to drive his head into Drummond's hip and remained on the Ford Field turf for several minutes.
