Bills waste no time in signing Posey

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Len Pasquarelli

The buzz-word in free agency this year is caution but, in building the Buffalo Bills roster, general manager Tom Donahoe has always taken the aggressive approach.

Posey
That's why it is not surprising the Bills are the first franchise to lure away an unrestricted player from another team in free agency. Striking quickly in the wee hours of Friday morning, the Bills reached a four-year agreement with linebacker Jeff Posey, who played for the Houston Texans in 2002.

I guess he will be our SLB - or may be they convert him into a rush end. He is listed as 6'4" 249lb, so he is big for a linebacker.

Another interesting thing in the article is Buffalo to meet with Mike Petersen this weekend...

I guess the Posey signing rules out Colvin...

yeah the last paragraph of the article means the most IMO, If we can land Peterson then this becomes a great "support cast" signing.

If they put the right guys together with just one or two impact players on D they can make :music:

I was joking about the whole 12:05 am thing but I guess TD really stayed up all night waiting for the deadline. TD is my hero!

Buffalo officials phoned agent Tony Agnone at about 12:15 a.m, Donahoe said, and the agreement was reached in less than an hour.

looking at his stats, sounds like a cheaper replacement instead of Newman.

Nice Signing TD

Romes
02-28-2003, 10:39 AM
he looks like a cheap mans Colvin. 5 years of NFL experience. Lines up over the TE. He had 8 sacks last year and 60 tackles. 2 forced fumbles and 1 int.

Oh, nobody guessed this one so I guess Fat Tony gets to keep his money once again.

Why a 3-4 LB? This guy hasn't done anything in the 4-3

A solid addition it looks like.

Still waiting for the first big name signing to give away the Zonebucks I promised ;)

is this guy any good? anyboy know anything about him? was this expected?

don137

I agree with you LOG for two reasons. One, the Bills need him or Spikes and Petersen is cheaper. Secondly, we both have him in the first big signing pool...

I know. I knda liked Colvin. I hope Posey turns out to be a diamond in the ruff. I hope the fins don't land Colvin either.

this guy played DE for the first two years of his career.

i cant decide what i think of him...

Pro Career
Quick, agile pass rusher who will suit up for his fourth team ... signed by the Texans as an unrestricted free agent on 4/18/02 ... converted defensive end ... has 84 career tackles and 40 special teams stops ... played in seven games for Jacksonville and four games for Carolina last season ... spent his first three campaigns in San Francisco ... originally signed by the 49ers as an undrafted free agent on 5/2/97

The key to a guy like Posey, is he can hold the point of attack... he should play the "sam" (SLB), and play it well. He will also have the advantage of playing in a 3-4, which will help him adjust to our D better than playing in a 4-3 would (this is because both styles use a 2-gap system, which he will be familiar with). One of the things that hamstrung us last year was Newman was pushed all over the field. Poor man's Colvin is about right with Posey... however I think he's actually a little bit faster and quicker than Colvin (whose pass rushing skill was more instinct and moves than speed). Unfortunately I haven't seen much of him (3 or 4 games)... and wish I had looked into him when talking about the UFAs so I could tell you more.

One LB down, one to go...

In your opinion Ingtar, is this a great pick-up? Do you think he will make as much of an impact like a Colvin?

I agree with you cash. A LB who's only successful season comes when he's played in the 3-4???? I say this was an average signing, with the potential to be a good one if he starts to impress.

Maybe we're going back to the 3-4??? LOL--I wish!

too cheap, given the deal for Mazlowski. I'm guessing total value of the deal goes closer to $8 than $5MM. Either way, a true value signing and worth the deal all the way.

I bet Clump's numbers are close. Posey only started 9 of 16 games last year and probably played for the veteran minimum, or close to it. With all the Lb's in free agency, he probably wanted to sign quickly so the market didn't dry up on him. I equate his value to Jenkins' value last year (about $1m/year). Hopefully he'll prove to be a better acquisition than Jenkins.

I have seen him a few times, he can get aftet people, he has "explosiveness", that Newman showed before (while behind a world class D line) but did not have behind crappy lines.

If we get a tackling machine WLB, and a DT, he will add a lot of value. Douglas would be nice too.

That is probably pretty close but a little low...

4 years $6 mil...$1.6 or $2.0 mil signing bonus (just because it is divisible by 4)...he go against the cap for about $1mil this year...just my prediction.

With this signing and the Bills meeting with Petersen leaves me to believe Buffalo wants to get a feel of Peterson's price and if it is reasonable they will get him and then go for Hugh Douglas. They will fill DT later on when the asking price goes down.

If Petersen is asking too much then they will forget Douglas and make a big push for Spikes since they need a stud linebacker.

Dumping Riemersma and Jenkins yesterday made it so we can sign one big stud before the Price situation is resolved which I think TD is hoping to be resolved very soon. I bet it happens right after Boston signs somewhere because Price will be the only solid WR left so his value will go up right after Boston is off the market.

The speed of this signing leads me to belive 2 things:

1. TD has had his eye on this guy for a while

2. He didnt want any other teams to get a crack at him

I got a feeling this is a true dimond in the rough...

ingtar stated that it is a closer comparison to get a LB that has played a 3-4 prior, because we use the same 2 gap system. our defense is already more compairable to a 3-4 than a standard 4-3..

i like the signing.

Excellent guess Ebenezer. The numbers are i:

Posey will sign a four-year contract worth $6.425 million. It includes a signing bonus of $1.75 million and base salaries of $575,000 (for 2003), $1.05 million (2004), $1.3 million (2005) and $1.75 million (2006).

Like I said if you signed him for a situational pass rusher, you did good. If you want him to play over the Tight End, play in space, and stop the run......you will quickly see why he has been a journeyman his entire career. I know my football.

Houston Chronicle (http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/sports/1800195)

Although Posey led the Texans with eight sacks last season, he was considered expendable by some in the organization who felt he was a player of average ability who flourished in a system tailored for outside linebackers. The Texans are one of the few teams in the NFL that use a 3-4 defensive alignment. Buffalo is a 4-3 defensive team. Posey has been cut three times by teams that use the 4-3.

Prior to signing with the Texans last April, Posey was a journeyman who played for three teams during the 2001 season. Posey started just 20 games and only had three sacks during the first four years of his career, but he blossomed under Texans coach Dom Capers, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, linebackers coach Reggie Herring and defensive quality control coach Jedd Fisch, who also works with the linebackers.

TD has a plan. He needed someone to put pressure on the QB from the linebacking position. Now he did that relatively cheaply. This gives them more money for other positions. Even though the Bills play a 4-3 defense it is a two gap system like the 3-4 but I am sure you knew that with all your wisdom and football knowledge. Let's just see who is smiling in January.
Look in the mirror regarding reality must suck because how many millions is your team paying for a left tackle that hasn't played a game?To think an expansion team is dumb enough to pick up a player that has a history of injuries and have it cost them millions yet he can't play because of a bum shoulder. Your right the Texans staff know what there doing LMAO...
