Hmmm, the Bengals have more Buffalo Bills news on their own site than the official Bills site has. Here's the latest....

The interest in the 6-2, 237-pound Shawn Barber, a speedy weak-side linebacker who had 100 tackles for NFC East champion Philadelphia this past season, shows the Bengals are preparing for the possibility of replacing right outside linebacker Takeo Spikes, their transition free agent. Lewis indicated if they sign Barber, the tag could come off and free up Spikes to move, but that was looking too far down the road Friday.

Various media outlets reported Friday that Barber was on his way to visit Kansas City and St. Louis before hitting Cleveland and Cincinnati, and, possibly Buffalo.

Bills general manager Tom Donahoe said Friday his club has interest in Spikes, but the transition tag that gives the Bengals the right to match any offer is making them move slowly. They have a visit set next week with Colts linebacker Mike Peterson.

“We may have Takeo up here at some point to visit,” Donahoe said. “We think he’s excellent against the run, he’s a playmaker, he’s a good athlete, and he’s a leader.”

i think it is smart for td to wait to see spikes. he knows that if the bungles dont remove the tag approximately what spikes would cost. so he can shop the other talent and make an informed decision on salary. in addition, the longer he waits the greater the chance the bungles remove the tag for one reason or another and that other teams will have already shot their salary wad so to speak. good job TD

I think if TD likes the numbers for Peterson, he'll go ahead and offer him a contract, if not then he check out Barber the same way. I don't think the plans to eventually bring in others are etched in stone nor would they preclude TD from jumping on a LB and signing him if everything seemed right.

but if TD waits too long on the Bungles and Spikes maybe Spikes will end up resigning him and it'll be after Peterson and Barber are gone. and we lose out on all the really good WLB's.
