We all know QB is the most challenging position on the field. QB's have to make downfield reads in a fraction of a second while also having the pocket presence to feel if there is pressure around them, then accurately throw a ball as much as 40 yards downfield all while some very large and angry men are attempting to drive them into the ground. It's mentally demanding and requires both physical skill and a degree of toughness.
But how long does it take to determine if a QB will ever "get it"? 16 starts? 24 starts? Two full seasons? Three? Does the talent of the team around the QB matter?
If JP finishes out this season (and I absolutely think he should) and doesn't get injured, that means he will have 24 starts under his belt. Is that enough for a fair evaluation? Do we need to consider that he had a piss-poor OL, no TE's and had to learn a new system this year?
No one wants to hold onto a QB too long (Boller, Ramsey, Harrington), but at the same time, no one wants to waste 2-3 seasons developing a new QB unless it's the only option.
At the end of the day, we all want this team to win. When will we know enough about JP to determine if he can help us do that or not?
