How many games does it take to evaluate a QB?

DISCLAIMER: This thread is meant to pose questions and it is not intended to be pro-JP or anti-JP.

We all know QB is the most challenging position on the field. QB's have to make downfield reads in a fraction of a second while also having the pocket presence to feel if there is pressure around them, then accurately throw a ball as much as 40 yards downfield all while some very large and angry men are attempting to drive them into the ground. It's mentally demanding and requires both physical skill and a degree of toughness.

But how long does it take to determine if a QB will ever "get it"? 16 starts? 24 starts? Two full seasons? Three? Does the talent of the team around the QB matter?

If JP finishes out this season (and I absolutely think he should) and doesn't get injured, that means he will have 24 starts under his belt. Is that enough for a fair evaluation? Do we need to consider that he had a piss-poor OL, no TE's and had to learn a new system this year?

No one wants to hold onto a QB too long (Boller, Ramsey, Harrington), but at the same time, no one wants to waste 2-3 seasons developing a new QB unless it's the only option.

At the end of the day, we all want this team to win. When will we know enough about JP to determine if he can help us do that or not?

After last week he has proven to me that he can be a clutch player. As long as he plays decent the rest of the season I am fine with him being the starter again next year. Meaning that my evaluation is over and I am confident in keeping him.

IMO, it's obvious within 10 games if they're a boom or a bust.

for an RB maybe. For a QB, no friggin way. There have been some great QB's that looked horrid for their first year or so. Carson Palmer comes immediately to mind.

I saw Donovan McNabb in his first year in the NFL when the Bills destroyed the Eagles 26-0. He looked like he had no idea what he was doing. And he took his team to 3 NFC Championship games and a SB.

And yet you are still starting Harrington??

My only concern is his consistency, because Losman has a tendency to regress after it looks like he's improved. I don't want to take away from what he did Sunday and I'm not saying that's going to happen this time, but I would feel a lot more confident if he responded with a decent outing against Jax this week.

Was Harrington not the QB that played and won vs Chicago? or are we being delusional and saying he still sucks?

JP wins vs Houston, Harrington wins vs Chicago. Sounds about right.
                That proves NOTHING about Losman

On a serious note, no one expected Brees to be as good as he is today. Obviously not when he was drafted and not after 2 years. Even when he was let go, people said he wouldn't amount to much without Gates.

Didn't Harrington lose vs Houston? Or was that child hands?

                            Couple of things wrong there
                            1) Can you name a QB besides Brees? I can name more QB that still sucked in their 3rd year. JMO.
                            2) San Diego did something about Brees sucking. They saw Rivers there, knew he had talent, and didn't waste that opportunity. Instead the Bills watched Leinart and Cutler slip right through their hands. It's time for you guys to get another QB. If Losman pans out next year, fine. Otherwise you still have an option.
                            3) Losman has proved nothing more than he won't throw an INT if he has less than 15 attempts. That's it. He hasn't proved he can take over a game. He hasn't proved he can lead his team. He's proved nothing. There's no reason why your future needs to be this guy's shaky potential. This draft, you do the smart thing and pick up a QB. Enough BS, either Losman pans out or he doesn't/
