A temporary time out from the Losman bickering war to talk about the Buffalo Bills Team.
The whole point of this season was to move this team in the right direction. It's starting to look that way.
A work in progress with many positions still needing a player upgrade but the effort is moving north every week.
Like what I've seen of #7 lately. He's short on weapons but progressing on his reads better. Feel the coaching staff is holding him back a bit for his own good but the team is staying in games that way, giving them a chance to win.
The OL is obviously improving over the last month. Still needs work in run blocking but the pass blocking is much better. Peters and Pennington are uber raw in experience but show tons of ability and upside. I thought Preston played well at times today. I saw him move out Henderson on a few plays, which is no small feet. Cieslak is blocking well at TE and may eventually move out Royal, just as he moved passed Everett. SHows good hands.
On D, a crying need for a big DT is still evident but Triplett has really come on the past month, with a huge game today being his best. Schobel still playing well. Hargrove was well worth the 2nd day pick we gave up for him. Is very hard to block and is getting constant pressure as a pass rush specialist.
Spikes still playing in slow motion and Fletcher may be gone after this year, so LB may be a crying need. Outside of Crowell, Ellison is good, fast and small. Not sure if he can hold up as an everydown starter.
Not thrilled with the deep drops the secondary is taking but lots has to do with having 2 rookies at the Safety positions. They are playing more of a prevent, which can be maddening at times but doesn't give up many big plays deep.
Needs for 2007 :
Offense - Another TE, #2 WR with good hands, 1 or 2 big Guards, maybe a OT but I'd like to see the 2 we have now to keep playing and improve. They show talent so go to more needy positions. Find 2 more huge Guards.
Defense - MLB to replace UFA Fletcher, definitely a big DT, another OLB who may need to replace Spikes (possible 5.5 mil cap cut) and maybe a CB to replace Clements, although that may come from within with Thomas or Youboty.
March FA - That's where you can find another TE, like Graham of the Pats or Johnson of San Fran. Seems several WR's with lots of catches are always out there. Maybe a LB
The Draft is where you get your big bodies for the lines, since everyone now vastly overpays for Vets in FA. Also a MLB
I predicted 5-8 wins with another year needed to tweek the roster. The plan looks good so far. The Playoffs was a pipe dream but progress was the plan.
It's getting better. I can see it from the stands. Eyes wide open.
