    Texans hope Wiegert addition improves protection

    Instant relief, in the person of a proven veteran offensive lineman, is on the way for beleaguered Houston Texans quarterback David Carr.

    The Texans on Saturday signed eight-year veteran lineman Zach Wiegert, a player who will help protect Carr, sacked a league-record 76 times in his '02 rookie season. Details of the long-term contract were not yet available.

    Houston general manager Charley Casserly reiterated at last week's predraft combine sessions that revamping the offensive line was the biggest priority this offseason, and Wiegert is believed to have topped the Texans' wish list. An eight-year veteran, Wiegert played the last four seasons in Jacksonville.

    Texans head coach Dom Capers was the Jaguars defensive coordinator for a portion of Wiegert's tenure in Jacksonville.
