March 1, 2003) -- As free agency opens up its 2003 season, we saw a few trades that made great business sense to the teams involved.

Here are a couple of points to remember:

Teams significantly over the cap only two days before the start of free agency got some value for players by trading them rather than releasing them.
The teams trading for a player got a contract that didn't require a signing bonus or 2003 contract values.
Teams trading for players don't have to compete for the services of a player like other teams in free agency have to.
With extra draft picks now in hand, a team that gave up a veteran player finds itself with leverage to do other business as the draft nears. They might even consider using the extra pick to go after a restricted free agent.
Let's look at the first four trades of the year and what was achieved.
