Leave it to the old poker player, Tom Donahoe, to be the first one at the table for the start of NFL free agency. The Bills were on the phone to Tony Agnone, the agent for free-agent linebacker Jeff Posey, at roughly 12:15 a.m. Friday, 14 minutes after the official starting bell. Come on, Tom, you couldn't get the call through by 12:01?
Anyway, this could turn out to be a steal for the Bills. Donahoe and Tom Modrak, the assistant GM, have a reputation for identifying linebackers on the rise. Posey had eight sacks last season in a breakthrough year for the expansion Texans. The Bills' top four linebackers (London Fletcher, Keith Newman, Eddie Robinson and DaShon Polk) had six sacks combined last season. Plus, Posey will count only $1.01 million against this season's salary cap.
