Notes: Combine's running problem not players' fault

There were loud complaints last week by NFL personnel men at the scouting combine about the number of players who refused to work out.

Rick Spielman, the Dolphins vice president of player development, screamed the loudest. On a podium, in front of the media gathered in front of him, Spielman tore into those players.

"It's an embarrassment to the kids and an embarrassment to the agent for them not to come here and work out or do position drills," said Spielman. "If he can't get prepared to come in here and stack up against people of his position, then how is he going to get ready for the season week in and week out?"

Others offered the same sentiments, but with a little less directness.

"Why are they afraid to run?" asked one NFC personnel director. "Just get up there and do it."

The NFL people can cry all they want. But they are the ones to blame for the players deciding against running on a supposedly slow track at the combine.
