Here is a list of all the current starting QB's in the NFL (as well as their backups if the current "normal" starter is hurt), and a few extra guys thrown in there for good measure - just because their names are always brought up.

I broke them down into four categories, all relative to how I'd feel about having them on the Bills right now and for the immediate future, compared to JP Losman.

Read and discuss, and make your own if you want:

No brainers - rather have him than JP

Tom Brady
Carson Palmer
Peyton Manning
Trent Green
Donovan McNabb - I'm assuming he comes back healthy
Drew Brees
Michael Vick - Yeah, yeah, he can't pass. He has some extreme lows, but he can still win games all by himself.
Matt Hasselbeck
Marc Bulger

Close, but rather have him than JP

Steve McNair - He's only had a couple bad games this year. Other than that, he's been money, is tough as nails and wins. He'd be a definite if he wasn't almost 34.
Ben Roethlisberger - Well, he does have that shiny thing on his finger, although it's looking less and less shiny lately.
David Carr - He's better than his record and/or numbers, and he's still young with a lot of experience and a big-time arm. I think he's a much better QB in a different situation. We may find that out.
Eli Manning - I'll keep him here for now, but his stock is dropping fast.
Rex Grossman - Even if he's somewhere in the middle of his start and his last few games, he's still been better than JP. And I can't argue with 10-2.
Brian Griese - He should have been starting in Chicago from day one.
Jake Delhomme - He's close to falling behind JP. He's costing his team games this season and will be 31 next month. That's not that old, but I wonder if he's turned a horrible corner for himself.
Chris Simms - (assuming he's healthy). He led his team to the playoffs last season. He was starting to play better before the injury and will continue to get better. But this is very tough. JP may wind up being better. I could put him on either list.

Close, but rather have JP

Chad Pennington - pop gun arm could fall off at any minute.
David Garrard - this is a tough call, but Garrard just looks like a stop-gap to me. Any length of playing time and he gets exposed. He's extremely inconsistent.
Damon Huard - OK, he played well when he filled in. But he's still Damon Huard.
Jake Plummer - Why get rid of a 25-year old JP for a 32 year-old JP?
Jeff Garcia - (See: Plummer, Jake....but add four years).
Brett Favre - It's only in the "close" column because he's still John Wayne in a helmet.
Jon Kitna - I like the guy and always have. But he's not getting any better than he is now. He's hit his ceiling.
Alex Smith - Tough call. JP's been better, but not a lot better.
Seneca Wallace - I'd like to have him on the Bills..........to play WR.
Charlie Frye - Might not be in this category if he cut down his INT's.

No brainer - rather have JP

Drew Bledsoe
Joey Harrington
Daunte Culpepper
Byron Leftwich
Aaron Brooks
Mark Brunell
Brad Johnson

Jury still out - not enough info yet (less than 10 career starts and others)

Vince Young
Matt Leinart
Tomo Romo
Jason Campbell
Matt Schaub - Don't give me that crap about how great he is. Rob Johnson was great for one game before we grabbed him. I want to see him play a little.
Bruce Gradkowski - This kid has a pretty good future.........but not in Tampa.
Jay Cutler
Philip Rivers

Did I forget anyone?

I automatically dismissed any QB that has not yet started 10 NFL games (and Rivers who has just a few more). So, these guys went to the "jury is still out" list regardless of my feelings on them as to avoid any bias.

I think this list is amazingly different now compared to what it would have looked like last season at this time.

I would take Rivers, Young and Pennington over JP. No question I also think Damon Huard is a better option.

I may not agree but very thorough and well thought out

:posrep:

I think JP looks strikingly similar to Crason Palmer in his first full year as the starter. If you remember, Cinnci played the QB carousel game with Kitna and Carson, then Carson came on.

I think JP will take the next step to one of the leagues better QB's when the supporting cast gets better. Im hoping thats what happens anyways.

I'd take Bulger and Vick off the first list.

I'd take Big Ben, Carr, and Rex off the second list.

And I'd move Romo and possibly Rivers up the list. I'd like to see how Rivers would do without LT in the backfield. That is a HUGE advantage.

Why Schaub? What has he done? Same with Young or Leinart.

I disagree with Vick. Yes, he wins games for Atlanta, but he also loses them. Maybe in the close category, but not a definite. And I think after this week you might drop Eli and maybe Grossman.

But, as usual a great job Coach. Give JP some more seasoning and work and he might move up even more.

I guess you haven't seen Vince Young win the last two games.

Leinart is obviously way better than JP. So is Schab.

How is Schaub better? Seriously. How can you honestly say that?

And Young has shown potential but he can think his kicker for the last game. If anything it was going to be a 17-17 game going to OT before Dungy called that last timeout. I think the Bills could've beaten the Colts if the coaches gameplan didn't set the team up to lose.

Did you see JP "win" two straight games too?

If you use wins and losses as your way of evaluation, then Leinart is way below JP, as he has been a starter for one win.

So why is Schaub "obviously" better than JP? Share with us why that is so.

the question is, who in that list would've thrived under the circumstances JP has been subjected to since he was drafted? A lot of QB in that list would've been dead.

You are smoking crack if anything about JP reminds you of Carson Palmer, who couldn't be more dissimilar.

He wasn't on any QB carousel with Kitna. Palmer's rookie season was spent as a backup to Kitna, and he never threw a pass. Palmer then was made the starter from day one in his second season, and improved through the year before getting hurt after playing 13 games.

In his first 7 games starting Palmer struggled going 136-for-247 (55%), 1468 Yds, 5.9 Yds/Att, 5 TD, 10 Int, 62.6 QB Rating

In his next 6 games before getting hurt he went 127-for-185 (69%), 1429 Yds, 7.7 Yds/Att, 13 TD, 8 Int, 96.9 QB Rating

It took Palmer less than half a season for the light to come on and show he is an elite player. J.P. is a 3rd year rookie with 20 starts and still hasn't shown that kind of ability.

Schaub shredded a NE defense for 300 yards if I recall. It would be nice to have a QB do that for us twice a year.

It's all opinion. I think that Schaub is a better QB than JP based upon what I've seen with my 30+ years of experience watching football.

Young and Leinart are certainly way way better.

Favre, Vick, and Hasselbeck are worse?

Schaub shredded a NE defense for 300 yards if I recall. It would be nice to have a QB do that for us twice a year.

Just for the hell of it I'm going to bring up the fact that ATL lost that game, so his stats don't mean a damn thing.

QB ratings are very deceiving. There is no way in hell I'd rather have Huard or Carr over Losman.

He is our present QB. 2.) He is our QB next year. 3.) He has improved immensely. 4.) We don't know where his ability will cap out yet. The sky is the limit.

It's all opinion. I think that Schaub is a better QB than JP based upon what I've seen with my 30+ years of experience watching football.

Young and Leinart are certainly way way better.

Wow, you sound real intelligent...You would rather have JP then Pennington hahahaha that has to be the...well, ummm, weridest things i have heard lately. You would rather have carr then pennington?...hmm weird again and roethlisberger...You seem educated

Did you see JP "win" two straight games too?

If you use wins and losses as your way of evaluation, then Leinart is way below JP, as he has been a starter for one win.

So why is Schaub "obviously" better than JP? Share with us why that is so.

you've got to be kidding me. JP has played like a huge dropping of **** just about every chance he's had in three years and Leinart and Young are out there winning games on ****ty teams after a couple starts in their first year. You can't be serious. And Leinart has won two games by the way. I'm going to be laughing for six months at you comparing Vince Young, who played like a ten year veteran the last three weeks against Eagles, Giants and Colts winning all of those games, to JP Losman who hasn't been able to get his head out of his ass for three years.

I'd love to see him be successful but thus far he's done nothing but suck with very occasional signs of being alive. I'm not so stupid to think that because we so badly need the QB position to be solved and I want it solved that it's actually solved.

Marv and the coaches do not share your opinion. As a matter of fact, you guys seem to be watching different games because they seem to think he's getting better . Sorry.

you've got to be kidding me. JP has played like a huge dropping of **** just about every chance he's had in three years and Leinart and Young are out there winning games on ****ty teams after a couple starts in their first year. You can't be serious.

After the good games JP has had, you're the one who can't be serious. Absolute :bs:

JP has played like a huge dropping of **** just about every chance he's had in three years and Leinart and Young are out there winning games on ****ty teams after a couple starts in their first year. You can't be serious. And Leinart has won two games by the way. I'm going to be laughing for six months at you comparing Vince Young, who played like a ten year veteran the last three weeks against Eagles, Giants and Colts winning all of those games, to JP Losman who hasn't been able to get his head out of his ass for three years.

JP has not played like a 'huge dropping of ****' every chance he's had. To say that is stupid.

But fine, keep your woody for Leinart and Young. The fact is JP is progressing, came from a smaller program and was known to be more raw.

Leinart has not done a damn thing in the NFL, but many still have a hard-on for the guy.

How many of the last 8 or so game shave you actually sat down and watched JP? Watched him take control of the team? Watched him take the team down the field int he 4th quarter?

This damn argument is moronic. The fact is some people don't want to see him succeed or refuse to see the progress he has made.

But don't worry, those people would have drove Terry Bradshaw and Drew Brees out of the NFL.

Smart moves.

Don't worry, in time they will all disappear :D. Just enjoy their hate for future references when they jump on the wagon.

I for one am not a JP fan. I was all for benching him last year. Now that this season was meant for nothing but rebuilding, I am looking at his development with objectivity. I've criticized JP but if I don't say he sucks, we're lickers.

yeah, JP had one actually good game against the Houston Texans and he was somewhat servicable in the second half of the chargers game...heck he couldn't even get in four quarters of servicable play in that game. BUT, you are going to tell me he's WAY better than Vince Young who has laid waste to bonafied playoff contending opponents in the last three weeks on a team that is near the bottom of the league at all positions.

The problem here is not that JP has shown some improvement...but the idea that a little improvement from JP somehow equates to what Vince Young has done in his first few starts as an NFL QB. You're probably one of those guys that's going to tell me JP is still a rookie too.

I didn't mention Young, and that's because I could give a crap.

JP also had good games early in the season and was clutch against the Jags. He's looked good more than he's looked bad, and he's progressing. That's all I care about. Nobody else.

Wow, you sound real intelligent...You would rather have JP then Pennington hahahaha that has to be the...well, ummm, weridest things i have heard lately. You would rather have carr then pennington?...hmm weird again and roethlisberger...You seem educated

You can find my name on page 136 of the American Football Coaches Association's 2006 Directory. It's directly above "Dom Capers" and a few names underneath "Dave Campo."

You can find me coaching December 16th in the State of Florida's South-Central High School All-Star Game. I'll be coaching the QB's and RB's for the South team.

So, in a nutshell, I've already forgotten more about football than you'll know in your entire life.

But, hey, just for kicks, let me ask you a question. If Chad Pennington is so good, why is Kellen Clemens going to be starting for the Jets next season? Losman and Carr will both have NFL starting jobs next year. Pennington will have to go and find one. What does that say about him?

JP has the advantage and SHOULD be doing better than them because he's been in the league longer and has had more time to adjust to the NFL and learned how things are in the NFL...so friggin stupid...its like saying, oh Bob in accounting is better at his job than guys just hired straight out of college. doesnt mean bob is CEO material.

Even if I don't agree with you on every point, good post Coach Sal.

I have no interest in getting into any kind of argument here, but I do want to just add this one thing.

Given the way that they are progressing, the one young QB that I definitely would not take over JP Losman is Eli Manning.

Living in the NYC area, I have gotten to see virtually every game that he has played and just about every criticism that could be leveled at JP could also be leveled at Eli. And, Eli has had a MUCH better surrounding cast than Losman. When you look at Eli's completion percentage and compare it to Losman's one thing that does not show up is how many errant passes Manning has thrown that Burress has caught for him. I know for certain that Burress caught at least a half dozen overthrown passes last season, including an outstanding one handed grab that he pulled down like a rebound, that no other receiver in the NFL would have been able to get to, let alone catch.

However, the primary reason that I would take JP over Eli is that, while Losman has shown progress in his game--however painstakingly slow, Eli, who started out with a HUGE advantage in terms of preparation for entering the NFL and playing the position on a NFL level, has plateued and even regressed this season (talk about locking onto a receiver (Burress) who is covered and ignoring open receivers (Shockey and, especially, Barber!)--I've seen Eli throw into coverage to Burress with a wide-open Barber standing along the sidelines with no one in front of him for at least 10 years so many times in the last two years that I stopped counting). For all of his preparation prior to becoming a pro, I don't think Eli has quite the physical gifts of Losman (although he's not far behind) or the same drive to improve. Because of his preparation, Eli will be OK, but I think that, with time, Losman has more upside and is already virtually on the same level with a lesser surrounding cast to support him. Indeed, I think all three of the other QBs taken in the first round with him will end up being better than Eli down the road for that very reason.

Of course, this is just my opinion and you can disagree.

Excellent post and well thought out.

Do you think John Hufnagel has anything to do with Eli's problems? He was credited with helping Eli develop so quickly, but I know he gets criticized for play-calling sometimes.
