The Edison Festival of Lights parade could someday rival Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City if festival officials have their way.
This will be the 69th year of the festival, which honors the life and achievements of Thomas Edison. Beginning in the 1880s, Edison wintered in Fort Myers.
At a press conference today announcing that the Miami Dolphins will be this year's grand marshals, Ginsberg said he plans to do for Fort Myers what he did for the Niagara (Ontario, Canada) Wine and Grape Festival.
When he started as general manager of that event 10 years ago, he had a $250,000 budget. When he left in July to come to Fort Myers, the event had a $10 million budget. The Edison Festival of Lights has a $750,000 budget for the 2007 festival.
"How do you run and grow great events? Investments of hundreds and thousands of dollars," Ginsberg said. "You grow by having great sponsors. And also by having great experiences."
