1987 Vs. 2006

It has been my contention all along that this season has reminded me of 1987. (Minus the strike)

Take a look at some of the striking similarities...

Won some thrillers against better teams that we probably shouldn't have:

1987:
Denver 21-14 (1987 AFC Champions)
@ New York Jets 17-14

2006:
Jacksonville 27-24
@New York Jets 31-13

Lost a couple hard fought games we very well could have won:

1987:
@Cleveland 21-27
@LA Raiders 21-34

2006:
@Indianapolis 16-17
San Diego 21-24

Barely scored a touchdown against the eventual NFC Champions:

1987:
Washington 7-27

2006:
Chicago 7-40

Lost a big game at home in a windstorm with playoffs on the line in the second to last week:

2006:
Tennessee 29-30

1987:
New England 7-13

Shutout the fish in a late-season game at home in a misty rain:

1987:
Bills 27 fish 0

2006:
Bills 21 fish 0

IMHO, the difference is Marv, and everything he brings to the table.

And if this formula follows suit, there is no reason not to believe that the team is actually acquiring the maturity to win more of the close ones next season.

Another draft.

Another FA period.

We could be 12-4 next year.

I wonder if the 87 team was ignored in the media like the 06 team has been. today i read an article where some bozo said losman hasn't had a good season and wasn't a good fit for buffalo...

I remember that 87 season very well. The Bills beat Houston at home on something like the last play of the game to win 34-30 as well.

The Bills just had to win one of their last two games that season, but they lost at Philly and vs NE. I remember just about all the games that year. The Raiders game was tough as was the Browns. I remember the Bills went to Joe Robbie and beat the Fish in overtime to get the first road win against the Dolphins since 1983. I remember either Robb Riddick or Greg Bell (I think Riddick since Bell might have already been traded) throwing a pass back to Kelly in that Broncos game, and the Bills leading 18-0 at halftime. That was a very young team with a lot of upside, just like this one.

Although the talent level isn't quite the same, there are valid comparisons that can be made between the two rosters.

In 1987, Kelly was entrenched at quarterback, and now Losman, though a long way from being a polished player, is starting to show signs that he could be the man who at long last gives the Bills hope at the most critical position.
The Bills had to wait until 1988 to get their running back in Thurman Thomas, and this team already has that player in place with Willis McGahee.

Andre Reed then, Lee Evans now.
The offensive line of '87 was further along in its development and skill, but the newly created '06 group looks like it could become solid if it stays together.
On defense, no one can replace Smith, but Schobel is trying his best. Conlan, Bennett and Darryl Talley were a great linebacker trio, but you can do worse than the present alignment of London Fletcher, Angelo Crowell and Takeo Spikes. And in the secondary, while Nate Clements may be gone via free agency next year, young players like cornerback Terrence McGee and safeties Whitner and Ko Simpson match up nicely with the '87 trio of Odomes, Mark Kelso and Dwight Drane.
As for Tasker and the special teams? They were special then under coach Bruce DeHaven, but Bobby April has coached the best kicking teams in the league the last two years, and not much has changed this year.
Levy listens to all this, and he's still not ready to say, "By golly, you're right, this is dij vu all over again."

But he doesn't dismiss the comparisons, either. "I feel very good about how the organization is working," he said. "There's a fantastic working relationship between Dick and myself and the scouts, like there was between myself, Bill and John Butler.
