Chargers trigger Qualcomm Stadium out clause

SAN DIEGO (March 5, 2003 1:48 a.m. EST) - In a move that outraged San Diego Mayor Dick Murphy, the Chargers triggered an out clause in their lease at Qualcomm Stadium on Tuesday.

The decision to trigger the renegotiation clause, which had been expected, opens a 90-day window to come to a new stadium deal with the city. It begins a process that could end with the team moving out of San Diego.

"The start of this process does not signal that the team intends to leave San Diego," said Mark Fabiani, a former Clinton White House lawyer who is serving as special counsel to the Chargers. "We have no intention of talking to any other city as we begin a negotiation process with the city of San Diego."

Murphy said the team was short-circuiting the city's good-faith process to review the Chargers' demand for a new stadium. The city council scheduled a March 18 hearing on a final report by a citizens task force on ways to keep the team in the city.

          Chargers issue before City Council

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego City Council will meet in special session this morning to decide whether to approve an eight-month extension in negotiations between the city and the Chargers over the team's Qualcomm Stadium lease.

Mayor Dick Murphy announced the session Wednesday after meeting with team president Dean Spanos on Tuesday. The current 90-day period of exclusive negotiations with the city, already extended once before, was set to expire Aug. 31.

Without an extension, the Chargers will enter an 18-month window in which they could explore moving to another city. The team is holding training camp in Carson, and Los Angeles could be one possible suitor.

"We asked the Chargers for as long as we could get," Murphy said, "and they agreed to May 1. I would have preferred two years, I would have settled for less. ... The directive from the City Council was to get as long a period as we could."
