    Bob Matthews, D & C column

Some Buffalo Bills fans have suggested that the team should use the No. 12 overall pick in the 2007 draft on a wide receiver to take pressure off Lee Evans and rev up the NFL's 30th-ranked offense. The team could address other needs (linebacker, defensive tackle and tight end) in free agency. If Calvin Johnson (Georgia Tech) or Dwayne Jarrett (USC) were available, I'd buy that idea. But they probably won't be. I don't believe Ted Ginn Jr. (Ohio State), Jeff Samardzija (Notre Dame) or Robert Meacham (Tennessee) are quite good enough to go that high.
For the record, since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, only one wide receiver was chosen with the No. 12 overall pick — Alvin Harper by Dallas in 1991.

Discouraging note for Bills fans: In the decade of the 2000s, only Buffalo, Arizona, Detroit and Houston (franchise began in 2002) have failed to make the playoffs. ... Encouraging notes for Buffalo Bills fans: In the last five NFL seasons, 32 of the 60 playoff teams did not make the playoffs the previous season. At least five new teams made the playoffs in each of the last 11 seasons. The Bills appear closer to breaking the ice than the Cardinals, Lions or Texans.
