The Kansas City Chiefs have upped their offer to their future Hall Of Fame tight end enough to perhaps get a new deal done as soon as today...

The Chiefs' Tony Gonzalez told FOXSports.com that he is very close to a five-year extension to remain in Kansas City rather than hit the free agent market. The deal includes a stunning $17 million in guaranteed bonus money and averages more than $6.25 million per year — huge numbers for a tight end — with $18 million over the first three years.

for that kind of money, I'd rather not have a TE on the wrong side of 30

yeah that's too much, but still too bad- I was hoping the Bills would at least pursue this guy.

Very classy of KC to show him some respect. He should retire as a Chief.

No way he would have started over Royal for Buffalo. :zapper:

Has he done well the last few seasons?

Yes. had a quieter year in 2005, think he had an injury or two, but was strong in 2006.

I think a good pass catching tight end would do wonders for JP. But I don't see too much in FA. Daniel Graham is a definate talent, but I think he's known a little more for blocking than receiving. Not sure he'd be a huge upgrade over Royal. Eric Johnson is very good, but he's always hurt. Beyond that, Jerramy Stevens will probably re-sign with Seattle, and I don't think anyone else in FA is to interesting.

Draft looks weak for TEs too.

Is that a joke? Royal is much better suited to be a No. 2 TE. He starts here because we don't have anyone better, and that's saying a lot.
