Capers' new deal is for three years and an estimated $8.1 million, team sources confirmed. His salary in 2007 will be $2.6 million, equal to that of Washington Redskins assistant head coach/defense Gregg Williams, but Capers will get raises of at least $100,000 per year in 2008 and 2009

Its going to be very interesting to see how this plays out. I would assume that the HC candidates who are still being considered were asked about working with Capers in their first round of interviews and were OK with him as their DC. Especially since Wayne has a history of hiring coaches and giving them total control. It would be very unlike the way he has done things in the past if he just gave Capers this contract and then told all the HC candidates "He is the DC, live with it."

Tomlin, Schottenheimer Get Second Interviews

[ESPN] Chris Mortensen reports Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin and Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer have emerged as finalists in the Dolphins' search for a head coach, sources confirmed.

Tomlin will interview for the second time on Monday, followed by Schottenheimer on Tuesday.

The Dolphins have pared their list from 12 candidates to four or five. Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey and San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron also are believed to be finalists for the Dolphins' job.

Schottenhenheimer just finished his first season as a coordinator. The 33-year-old son of San Diego Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer is the youngest coordinator in the NFL. Brian Schottenheimer was the quarterbacks coach in San Diego prior to joining Jets coach Eric Mangini's staff this past season.

Tomlin, 34, also just completed his first season as a defensive coordinator. He originally was interviewed by Nick Saban for the Dolphins' defensive coordinator job in 2005. Tomlin is also a finalist for the Pittsburgh Steelers vacant head coaching position.

Gailey, 55, was Miami's offensive coordinator from 2000-01

Chan Gailey also just interviewed with the Steelers for their head coach position. He was reccomended to the Steelers by Bill Cowher himself. He told the Rooneys that they should interview him.

To me Gaily is solid no risk kind of hire. He has worked with Capers, Mularkey, our o line coach Hudson, and our QB coach Garrett played under him. He would be able to come in and probably retain most if not all of those guys so their would be lots of continuity. The problem with that is that I DONT WANT CONTINUITY at the OC position. I want MM gone and I doubt that happens if Gaily comes aboard. Safe hire but I don't think a great one. He probably wouldn't bomb but I just don't see the upside when compared to an innovative offensive mind like Brian Schottenheimer. Now that Capers is locked up to run the D I am kinda hoping we end up with either Cam Cameron or Schotty.

I think he will lose his job, and go to another team as their:

1. Offensive Quality Control Coach (Look out Alex Van Pelt!)
2. Tight Ends Coach (No, seriously...)

Otherwise, there's no hope for him.


I would laugh if another team hired him as:
Offensive Coordinator, QBs Coach, Offensive Line Coach...

I have a friend that works for the Falcons and he and I both agree that whoever takes that job is inheriting at least one, maybe two losing seasons.

You have major issues that will need at least two seasons to address. Very similar to where Buffalo started this past year.

I'm not comparing the Dolphins to the Bills. So if you are mature enough I will answer your question:

1) QB.

2) OL

3) Running game.

4) Yes, the defense has played well, but they are old and let's remember that you still finished last in the division.

Is that enough issues?

1) Daunte is a nice problem to have.

2) We had several injuries to this unit and we are a LT away form being a good unit.

3) We have Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams will return this season, does that sound like a problem?? It doesn't to me.

4) God, it's like talking to a brick wall, we have age on the Dline....ONLY! However, we are also deep with youth on the Dline, Matt Roth, David Bowens, Kevin Vickerson, Fred Evans, Rod Wright, Manny Wright and lets not forget Miami has money to spend this year for the first time since we traded for Ricky Williams, we will replace a few of the veterans on the Dline for sure, so again wheres the problem here??? Even if we replace no one on the Dline we still were as high as #2 overall this year on D, what makes you think next year would be any different? The age thing is way overrated, the Dline is the only place on the D youth isn't important. Look at the likes of Reggie White and Bruce Smith!
