SAN DIEGO -- Marty Schottenheimer will return as coach of the San Diego Chargers next season, but turned down the team's offer to exercise a one-year club option for 2008 worth $4.5 million.

well if Jauron doesn't get us into the playoffs next year, I'd take a shot of martyball.

my guess is he probably wants to take one more shot at the superbowl... if he can't hit it next year, he will probably retire.

that's not to say he couldn't be "coaxed" out of retirement for the right price... but the guy is in his 60's... i'm guessing he is thinking about retirement.

He probably isn't interested in a one year extension. He still expects to have a good team next year hence will remain a hot candidate for another opening.

Marty's never been good at extending anything, especially his team's seasons in the playoffs.
