According to ESPN he signed a 5 year 8 million deal to play baseball only with the Cubs.

What a shame....... He had a chance to be an effective WR. He will not make it in the majors.:dead:

While I think it's such a crap decision, you can't blame him. Baseball players make more money w/ less wear and tear on the body.

He was dropping to 2nd rounder in the draft, wouldnt have made as much money as he could with this deal.

Plus he's a damn good pitcher.

I'm not sure his skill set translated all that well to the pros anyway. I thought he was overrated.

He made it clear last year he was playing pro baseball, no surprise.

No he didnt, he clearly stated he was going to attempt to play both football and baseball

It's his choice. I'm not going to trash him for not wanting to play football anymore. Good luck to him.

That's not what I read, he has always wanted to play baseball, but he wouldn't count football out.

You have to be crazy IMO not to take the money for baseball. More money in baseball, Careers are longer, and less risk of major injury....

Kirk Gibson was a 1st team All-American WR at Michigan St., many moon ago. He made a good decision to play baseball and won a couple WS rings.

I don't blame this kid for taking the 10 Million $ lock and trying to pitch. He can always come back in a few years and try football, if it doesn't work out. He says baseball is his first love and he's being paid FAR higher than any football deal he'd see.

Some NFL team will still use a 7th round pick on him and hold his rights as a gamble.

Thank you, I thought I was losing it for a second there. My neighbor's a hardcore ND fan and I sent him an article on Smardzija last year stating that he planned on playing baseball instead of football.

i saw him as a drew bennett type... just more polished out of school than bennett was.

i think baseball is a gay sport, so i think he made the wrong decision personally, but i cant blame him.. it is not like if he gets cut or sucks, he cant play football later.

i can't blame him for his decision... but i would have rather seen him play football.

Yeah when he doesn't have 2 replaced knees at 50 he probably will think his decision was correct....

Baseball is gay.... F THAT!

He's a lefty, he'll be in the majors for a longtime. Plus 10million is more than he would've gotten in the NFL.

If he's there in the 7th round, I hope Buffalo drafts him.

I think this is good for Buffalo. He had some question marks as a pro football player and i didn't want any experiments drafted this year. I'll take players that we know can play based on their round. He was a first rounder that was really a 3rd or 4th rounder.

Well he was expected to be drafted in the 1st or second round in the NFL draft. He was drafted in the 5th round in the MLB entry draft. That's not a big deal though.

What I will say is that it will be a lot harder for him to make it as a pitcher that it would be for him to make it a a receiver. However, he can make much more money being a mediocre baseball player than a mediocre football player.

And for the record, baseball is da bomb, yo!

Jeff is a hell of a P and will do fine in the majors and think he'll be there in a year or 2, this was a smart move cause with baseball the money is all gaurenteed
